Sri Lanka - diving with whales in Mirissa

There are definitely trips to snorkel with blue whales and not just see them: Blue Whale Free Diving Expedition to Sri Lanka. Swimming with blue whales | Big Fish Expeditions That being said, my friend went with BFE a few years ago and he said it was very difficult. The blue whales would show...

    Trip insurance?

I always use World Nomads. I had a day of blue shark freediving/snorkeling cancelled due to weather. I submitted a claim to WN and they fully reimbursed me for the cost of said day ($350). Received my money within a month after filing claim. Very easy.

Are the photos on your blog taken with a Nikon 1 J1? Just want to get a sense of what underwater photos can look like - I have a DSLR set-up I'm happy with, but this might be nice for some snorkeling.

Nautilus Guadalupe July Season Openers - worth it?

Cape Town won't give you 200ft. visibility with multiple great white sharks and maybe even some surprise other visitors (had a shortfin mako appear last time). Nautilus is great. I highly recommend them. I'd go for it!

    Recent info on St. Johns?

I'm headed there in July. The Westin reopened last week. To quote them: "By and large, the resort will be better than it was before the storm because all of the furniture and much of the equipment will be new. There will also be new grills, water fountains and shade sails on the hillside, and...

Combining diving in Africa (possibly Sardines run) and safari

I'm not making recommendations per se, but some possible options in South Africa: -Dive False Bay (off of Cape Town) and go on safari at Aquila, a private game reserve (2hr drive away). Big Fish Expeditions runs a trip doing that combo: South Africa Great White Shark Diving Expedition. Diving...

Help please going to Nassau for the first time

Not much point. I've done it twice, both times being the first person to descend and the last to ascend. The dives are so shallow, and you barely move, so minimal air consumption.

Most interesting or unusual cold water place you’ve dived?

I live in New England, where people assume there is no diving to be done, but: If you're into wrecks, there are some cool 19th century wooden wrecks in Lake Champlain, Vermont. Alert Diver just had an article about them: Alert Diver | Diving into Lake Champlain’s History Isles of Shoals off of...

    Marine life picto books

I love the New World Publications' guides: fishid.com I own the Reef Fish ID, Reef Creature ID, and Reef Coral ID eBooks for the Florida/Caribbean/Bahamas and they're all fantastic. Princeton Field Guides is my go-to for sharks and whales (have specific books for each).

Which of these islands has the best dives? (St Thomas, St John, St Kitt)

St. John and St. Thomas are equally average. I've been going to St. John for years, and while I do always scuba dive there, I've found I see just as much while snorkeling.

    Research of Sardine Run Diving

Hi Tim, I'll preface by saying this is all from my personal research. I have an interest in diving the Sardine Run as well; just have not had the opportunity yet. But I'll share what I've learned so far, and maybe someone more experienced can chime in. -I've seen Sardine Run packages from...
