@rabe, what did you like about them? What stood out? I'll be doing one day of Sydney diving in July, so just curious.

That is the trip! I'm in a budget room. I've never even been to Australia before! But Mike Ball was well-reviewed here and elsewhere on the Internet, and this trip seemed to be the best IMHO.

I'm booked on the 7/23/20 trip with Mike Ball. Far north Coral Sea expedition and dwarf minke whales. If there's space, you should come along! I'd love a photography buddy there as well.

That specific op does not give refunds for weather, hence why I had purchased the insurance!

I use World Nomads for travel insurance. Last year I had a day of shark diving off of Rhode Island cancelled due to weather. World Nomads fully reimbursed me for the cost of the shark diving ($350).

I stayed at Sea World when I was there (November 2018). If you want basic budget lodging, I would choose them. For something nicer, Castle Comfort seemed like a good option. They have an on-site dive op, Dive Dominica. If you're going in winter, you might be there in time for the sperm whales...

I absolutely love this book and recommend it to anyone (even those without a strong interest in marine life). It will move you.

@Bre I brought my full-sized DSLR set-up on Blackbeard's and had no issues. I was one of three photographers on board. A tad tight at times, but overall it was fine and definitely worth bringing!

After my Blackbeard's trip, I did two days of shark diving with SC and it was awesome! Highly recommend.

Haha, I'm sure I'm the exception! It's a pretty amazing experience. Definitely worth doing once. It's not too hard to find discounts - the first time I got $200 off ($2,900 total cost), and the second time I got 50% off ($1,500 total). Just keep an eye out on Scubaboard, Divebooker, etc.

It just depends on how much you love great white sharks! I logged 27 cage hours the first time I went, 29 hours the second time. I once spent 4 hours in a cage without surfacing. I couldn't get enough! The crew would just wrap up a lunch and leave it on the deck "for when Chris reappears"...

I tipped a similar amount. And I agree about La Jolla, I went shore diving with leopard sharks the day before my trip and it was great! Nobody on board had any clue about La Jolla either, I guess people are a little too laser-focused on the great whites.
