Moral of the Story - Bring the right equipment!

Remember that the ones with the GPS I/O require a connection to a GPS to get position info. And that when you go underwater you will lost the GPS signal.

Moral of the Story - Bring the right equipment!

Also, thanks to the link provided by scuba_jenny I found an update on the locations of the down links for the satellites. There are 15 now (14 offically operational) there is only ONE in the USA, in Maryland. All US rescue operations, triggered by EPIRBs, goes through that one station. They...

All are propritary to Garmin. Look at the list of devices that support blue chart. http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/fhsDataCardPopUp.html these are all stand alone GLS units. The Rino page even says: Exclusive position-reporting capability and a host of other unique features, make...

Moral of the Story - Bring the right equipment!

I don't know about a ball but safety strteamers (http://www.landfallnavigation.com/srsl1.html) and dye packs work well durring the day. Many avaitors carry day/night signal flares http://www.landfallnavigation.com/ssdns.html

Moral of the Story - Bring the right equipment!

This is not really suprising a swimmer, even waving a dive sausage, is an amazingly small target. ELTs or EPIRBs are helpful but few aircraft, except those specifically equipted for rescue, have the equiptment. Flares, smoke, streamers, and dye markers help A LOT durring the day, and strobes...

Moral of the Story - Bring the right equipment!

Don't count on 14 miles, this is only possible from mountain top to mountain top. The range depends on, among other things, the distance above ground (the water surface in this case). I use 5 watt ham radios (VHF and UHF -- same bands) all the time and NEVER have gotten 14 mile range. Figure if...

Why close the valve 1/4 or 1/2 turn???

I always notice. I often dive from boats where the DMs routinely do this. I appreciate that thay are concerened about my safety, but I ALWAYS do a breathing check after anyone touches anything on my air supply. So I often find myself checking the regs and bc inflator, while fully setup, on the...

    1 ATM containers

OMS has a 660’ depth rated canister. From the catalogue it appears to be a clear cylinder and has threaded openings at the end. Never seen or used a real one.

Reg breathes hard when swimming upside. Solutions?

If this were the case, then when vertical in the water (head up and feet down) the breathing would be even harder, as the height difference would be at the maximum. There is no position where the regulator would be higher with regard to the lungs.

hypothetical scenario 4 our Monday morning quarterbacks 20 miles out & boats gone

Long ago I was taught that survival is often determined by you personal preparedness to survive. This include several parts including you personal mode, and equiptment. I have a small pocket with a strechy velcor strap that I wear on my upper arm for any dive or than a mile from the mainland...

    Want to buy: .223 powerhead

Quick math indicates the initial speed of the spear would be on the order of: speed of bullet / weight of bullet = speed of spear / weight of spear

    Want to buy: .223 powerhead

Intrestingly the mythbusters and other research indicates that the higher the volicity of the round the shorter the penetration into water. This is because at higher volicitys (anything exceeding the speed of sound in water) cause shock waves in the incompressable water. This causes extreamly...

    Color tanks

In parts (soon all??) of europe tanks ARE color coded, by regulation. Some places even have valves that are not compatible for different mixes. If i remember correctly... air and nitrox ave a rust red body, an black and white (quarters) upper end. Very spefically defined...

Mr. Kim Lost In Oregon Wilderness

Well he was on a road that was closed or at least unplowed in the winter. He left his car and didn't now where he was going, he just hoped to find someone. I think he was lost when he started...

Another Newbie Q - wrist or console?

When I am doing an ascent, holding up my be inflator to control ascent, I find that haveing a depth guage on my left wrist real handy. I can just glance at my arm (which is right there holding the inflator) and see whats going on. Since I use a vytec I can also judge my ascent rate, and whether...

    Wreck dive in the making

I have herd this too, but in my (limited) esperience in practice no. The plastics distort in the heat or sun too. They twist and shift, They are not thermaly conductive so they take longer to thermaly stabilize, and the differntial heating causes some stresses. They are less massy and are harder...

    Gauges-Why Bother?

I did three dives this summer in a lake where the bottom is mostly about 30 ft. To get to 40 ft, in the deepest part of the lake would take a shovel. Nobody was wearing depth gauges. Only a few used SPGs. No one did safety stops either. Of course at 30 ft the NDL is something like 150 minutes...

Who to call first? Not DAN?

I have Kaiser medical insurance, and have since I was about 12. They operate the hospital nearest to me, and several other in the area. They are very clear about this. In an emergency call 911. They will sort it out later.
