    Pony bottle vs. Spare Air?

I have seen them used by helo pilots doing long over water flights over the north sea. They say that when the helo lands in the water there, it tips over immediately, generally faster than the can get out. The are trained to use the spare air before they hit the water, in case the cold water...

You're Lost At Sea!! What Signal Devices Do You Have To Use - and Why Not?

Sky blazer aerial flares, smoke/flare combo, dye packet, glow sticks, strobe, surface streamer. I use real SAR mirrors after a bit of mirror training a few years back. I put sky blazer flares and smoke/flare combo (supposedly water proof anyway) in small vacuum sealed bags. I carry it in a dive...

Simple way to cast lead weight - teflon pan

Be careful using nonstick pans at high temps. The coating is supposed to break down into toxic agents. A petition to put warning labels on nonstick pans said "Non-stick coatings break down to a chemical warfare agent known as PFIB, and a chemical analog of the WWII nerve gas, phosgene". A...

    Cleaning Gear

I use a tub, a dry bag (I have several for kayaking anyway) and some small padded cases. The dry stuff, towels, save a dive, log book, snacks, etc go into the dry bag. The wet stuff goes into a duffel on the boat, duffel goes into tub in car. If this is a dive trip, or I am diving again tomorrow...

    Lobos 5/23

Well if you are diving with one of the commercial dive boats they will grant a lot of latitude. I've gotten in by my self - after assuring them I was diving on the Beach Hopper and they hand a triple for me to buddy with.

MK10 rebuilt and theres an issue

Thanks everyone thats commented so far. The reg has O2 compatible rings in it and cristolube for all parts. There is a SP service note in a tech manual (which was shown to me) that said that the Mk10 was not for use above 40% O2, and that the Mk10plus, Mk20 and Mk25 were (when appropriately...

MK10 rebuilt and theres an issue

Just got my stage bottle regulator serviced. Its a Scubapro MK10 first with a S390 second. Bought it used and have used it a couple of years. Had it serviced twice before, for oxygen service and there was never a problem. This time i take it to a LDS which I trust and the repair tech says it...

    VHF handheld

if you store your VHF with the antenna removed, be sure to not get water in the connector when you reconnect it. The water will short the transmitter and it is likely to fail. Also only the coast guard can home on a VHF, so that even if you can reach someone they may not be able to find you...

Beware Suunto computers D9 and Vytec.

I have bought a lot of stuff from LP over the years, but when I needed a replacement computer I got it from a company in HongKong. Lets see them control the price there!

    Citizen dive watch

I have had the pins come out of watches and dive computers. Now I am very careful about the split push pins used to attached watches and the like. I never trust them and use a strap or other mount that will retain the object even of a pin comes loose. Even the super duty pins of the dive...

The most dangerous thing in the water?

I dove with rental gear (except wet suite) for years, then I got a bc that was too small -- when inflated it cut off my breathing substantially. Another time I got a reg that didn't (free flowed continuously) I stopped diving until I could buy the rest of the gear I needed...

    New maneuver of last resort?

well another consideration is how much air is in your bc during a dive. I generally have my buoyancy adjusted to the point i dont have more than maybe one or two good breaths (about 1 or 2 liters or 2 to 4 lbs) of air in there. I'd go for it if I had too, but wouldn't expect much.

Online Sales - The importance of buying from local businesses

A while ago I had a friend who was a marketing major at a local college. She needed a project so we decided to to a business analysis of dive shops in the SF bay area. Note this only covered the bay area proper not Monterey, which as a resort, is a special case... Our conclusion was that, on a...

New Diver Technologies are Slow to Evolve

Firemen use such tanks today, well almost. They use fiber wrapped tanks that are used at 5000 psi or more, and are quite light. Try diving one, particularly in say Monterey. You will need more lead on your belt. They are EXPENSIVE...
