Oxygen PPO2 and the Oxygen Window
There was once a belief, chiefly among DIR divers, that a very high PPO2 sped up the off-gassing process because the metabolism of oxygen (changing to CO2) created an "oxygen vacancy" that allowed for faster nitrogen off-gassing by creating more room for it to...
Here is a thread from a decade ago on ScubaBoard. It has about 1,300 posts, including many from some of the top experts in the world. In it, you will find people making your same argument. Rather than deal with it myself here, I will leave it to the experts who refuted them then to refute it...
The VPM algorithm was all the rage for many years, and, yes, GFs were added to Bulmann to replicate bubble models. However, that all changed quite a while ago, and the main reason is that the VPM algorithm is now believed (based on a NEDU study) to create first stops that are too deep. Expert...
What follows is slightly off topic, but I think it illustrates the uncertain legal status of the diving community in terms of liability.
You may know the name Richie Kohler. He was involved with the exploration of the German U-Boat described in the book Shadow Divers, and he teamed with John...
Malta actually had two highly troublesome cases, and I agree that they are an outlier to the point that I will make no plans to dive there. I fear that the prosecutors who went after those two cases are smarting from having them eventually tossed and are aching to find one they can win. The...
Not only were their allegations, he was tried for it in Alabama. The case was so ridiculous the judge directed an acquittal immediately after the prosecution rested--no need for the defense to make its case. Much of the concern was based on misinformation that circulated after the incident. Some...
Thank you very much for this. I believe a full description (without the preceding context of this thread) should be a new and separate thread rather than come at the end of page 3 of a 4-month old thread.
My understanding is that the waiver does offer some protection to the instructor--protection from what would essentially be nuisance lawsuits for events that are commonly considered normal dangers of scuba . It does not protect against true negligence, etc.
We just had a big thread on buddy (including instabuddy) liability in diving. One person insisted over and over that it was a big issue, but when pushed to show that it happens a lot (in the USA, at least), the best he could do was a paper written by an attorney who seemed to think it should be...
What the F are you talking about? Are you implying that people are talking about walking around the boat with a pile of cards saying "Look at me! I'm great!"
It is just a matter of showing one or two cards (as needed) when you sign up for the dive, the same as anyone else. On the boat, you keep...
Another anecdote.
A few years ago there was a disturbance in the dive operation choices in South Florida, and I started to use a new operator, one who didn't do much (if any) of the deeper NDL dives. When I registered, I showed the card I had in my gear--a trimix instructor card, which was way...
As I mentioned in a previous comment, on many trips I have been preassigned to the expert dive group or the expert dive boat before the DM even sees me, based on my certification.
I have never had a divemaster talk to me and ask me about my experience and the kind of diving I do before a dive...
The only time I helped an operator on a dive was at my own suggestion. I was hanging around the shop waiting for the dive when one of their instructors called to say he was ill and could not make it for the dive. Under their insurance, that very popular dive required a certain number of...
