I had the same issue I think with those ones, from a link someone else gave to Lynne. The small ones were good for AL80s and the medium were good for nothing if I recall correctly. Both sizes were looser than I usually like it on the 40s, especially as I place the lower band below the "handle"...

If you plan to service yourself and use HOG(Diaphragm) regs, or APEKS then you can remove that part of the equation and service them yourself. Piston first stages I think might be a little trickier, and some models of Scubapro require expensive/custom tools to service.

In my experience, they aren't. I think it's up to the instructor to try to make sure everyone has as fair a shot at the class as possible, but also taking into account the goals of the class. For me, GUE-F is more of a basics class, so more emphasis has to be on helping people get the basics...
