    Peter Duffin - Oriskany 10/22/2011

Very sad news indeed. I met your father once on a dive boat, and he seemed like a good man. Very sorry for your loss. Nick

Single bottle dives and choice of deco gas

For me, I would use O2 for most stuff 80-120 as a first choice, partly because the 50% is a bit less of a change from the BG, but also because I "like" O2 Once the rock bottom starts to get "too big" for the dive, then I would generally switch to, or add a 50% bottle. Anything deeper than...

    New Hog piston regs

Kevin, Is that the BP1 or a newer model ? I use a BP1 as a right-pos on my rebreather, and so far it's worked great for me, and awesome build quality. Whats the servicing like on these though ? We service our own diaphragm regs, but I've not yet attempted a piston, or even seen any kits.

I propose we have a poll to find out !

    Helium Fraction and Standardized Gases

Wow, Kev, even had I the stomach to attempt to make any sense of that. I'd probably take me a week. Still see you quoting percentages of a gas when PPN2 would actually make sense (I don't think my organs are that great with percentage calculations) The simple fact is, for moderate...

    Helium Fraction and Standardized Gases

You didn't answer the questions I put forth though, just did some vague arm-waving about M-values and saturation and percentages. The standard DIR gases are obviously not (by definition) perfect for every dive, but they seem to give a lot of people excellent results and are easily modified by...

    Helium Fraction and Standardized Gases

Almost sure I am going to regret having one more go at this Quoting from YOUR post #1 - "As decompressions times lengthen to two and a half hours or more..." Hmmm, wasn't this exactly what I said about for "reasonable" bottom times there being no problem? Hoe many dives have you done...

    Which SMB?

Randy, The 3.3 bag is a good one, but if you come down and dive LA in the San Pedro/Oil Rigs area, or any of the off-shore islands, i would highly recommend the 6 foot Halcyon bags. The swell and wind chop really make the 3 footers inadequate. There have been a bunch of times I had a very hard...

    Helium Fraction and Standardized Gases

I agree, if it was a real discussion. Even here, if it was a discussion, it might not be the worst thing in the world. However, when it's one guy repeatedly quoting a research paper that supposedly documents an effect that in real life (with good gas choices) never really happens, with no real...

    Helium Fraction and Standardized Gases

Kevin, Go take your "best mix" to a forum/thread where someone actually cares. We (who are posting), Don't. You repeat the same arguments based on some paper that just doesn't reflect the reality that if you use the standard gases for reasonable ranges of bottom times and increase the He...

    Helium Fraction and Standardized Gases

I remember reading a post by Clare Gledhill on some support-work she did with the WKPP where they were getting 190 bottle fills, which were 21/45 (I think, if i remember correctly)

    Helium Fraction and Standardized Gases

I have used 50/25 on a couple of dives that were between 220-270, where I had previously used just 50%, and noticed no difference at all (the bottle didnt even ride THAT much better) I believe the WKPP does routinely use much more Helium than the GUE defaults, and you can see that on their...

    Helium Fraction and Standardized Gases

To be serious here for a second I guess (if I have to) Kevins original assumption is not necessarily correct (as others have pointed out) He comes from the "If you are trying to offgass Nitrogen" .. why would you. And indeed, if you were ONLY offgassing Nitrogen then he would have a point...

    dive to 300 ft

Yeah, feels more like a 3-ring circus act than actual diving.

    Content Labeling Doubles

Evidently, I would of course not do the same dive I had originally planned (Until I take the "how to breathe from a tank with no regulator" training!!!)

    dive to 300 ft

I move bottles all the time, without incident. Maybe that diver needs some new (less slippery :) gloves. 3 bottles is one thing. Once you add a bottom stage + 3 deco then things start to look like the max I really want to do without a lot of support. Unfortunately most of our diving is "fun"...

    dive to 300 ft

For sure. Another good reason to skip the 35/25 and bring the 190 bottle which I think makes a better travel gas for that kind of dive.
