Finally got to dive with my XZ-1/PT-050 with internal flash diffuser....

I think the light falloff is just due to the fact that the fish head was farther away, and as we know, light falls off as 1/d**2. Plus light falls off at the edges of the flash. This is about what you can expect from the subject angled away. Since this 28mm lens is wider than the 38mm lens on...

NAUTICAM Housings for E-PL series, any reviews?

If you have the money, go for it. For me, it's a performance versus cost trade-off. The Olympus PT-EPL05 is much less expensive, and clearly not as wonderful. It also costs much less. You know that. Each of us has to make the evaluation given our own resources and wants/needs. On the...

Mis-aligned fiber optic ports in E-pl1 housing PT-EP01

I would caution against using felt, because of the heat from the flash. It's just me, but I would worry about fire. All that light energy gets absorbed and converted to heat inside the housing.

Mis-aligned fiber optic ports in E-pl1 housing PT-EP01

I wonder if a reflective shield might redirect the light? It would have to be on the housing, maybe hot glued... If that does not seem a good approach, you could bore another hole in the fiber plug to the camera, or fit this plug on two cords ($3!): Inon Double Hole Fiber Optic Plug (Rubber...

    Nikon 3100... anyone?

There is no comparison between them, I mean they are in such different price points and performance realms. The G12 in a Canon case with strobe will cost say $1000, but a D3100 system will cost probably $5000. I'm sure you know that, but to me they are hard to compare. If you want good...

Olympus status - should we be worried?

I'm in the same boat, with a lot of Olympus gear, and frankly a lot of fond memories of using it. This financial hanky-panky is worrisome. It has nothing to do with the technical aspects of their products, except that the future product development is on hold. I'm seem to get email every day...

    Inon UFL-M150 ZM80 with Pana 45mm on E-PL1

I too am curious about this add on lens. The instructions say to zoom to 80mm equivalent, to fill the frrame. Otherwise the image is a circular fisheye image inside a black border. See: Inon Underwater Micro Fisheye Lens UFL-M150 ZM80 [ino.4562121436213] - $329.00 : Reef Photo & Video!, The...

What's the deal with the newest version of the Olympus 14-42 II R in the E-P3 Kit?

I kept wondering why did Olympus release a new version of this lens, and I may have stumbled on the reason. The version II lens has an external bayonet mount, intended for mounting their wide angle, fisheye and macro conversion lenses. The II R does not seem to have this, judging from the...

What's the deal with the newest version of the Olympus 14-42 II R in the E-P3 Kit?

Olympus has announced and is shipping a new version of the 14-42 lens, called 14-42 II R. It seems to have the same specs as the second II version, but the external appearance is quite different. I can't see any real difference between the two, just looking at the specs, but the new version is...

Main difference in macro between compact and dslr?

I don't think there is any one perfect system for everyone. All are compromises. All we can do is pick the one that best matches our own values. Here's a rough general view: Cost: A good DSLR setup will cost $5000 and up. A smaller M43 system will cost $1500-3500. A compact system using a...

Has anyone tried the new Samyang 7.5mm manual fisheye lens?

As you know the Panasonic 8mm fisheye is a great lens, but expensive (about $800). The combo of the 14mm lens and Sony fisheye adapter would cost less (say $350-400). So it's very interesting for land use, being more versatile and cheaper. But is there a port? The only candidate would seem...

Has anyone tried the new Samyang 7.5mm manual fisheye lens?

Looking into this further, I discovered another possibility: Sony Fisheye adapter VCL-ECF1 on the Panasonic 14mm lens. According to one seller on ebay who bundles them, With Sony VCL-ECF1 attached on it, the focal length of the lens will be become 8.7mm (0.62X) with Fisheye Effect.

Has anyone tried the new Samyang 7.5mm manual fisheye lens?

I was intrigued by a new third party lens for M43 cameras. This is a tiny 7.5mm fisheye lens, manual everything, but with a mount for M43. Has anyone tried it? What is the chance of the Zen 8mm port being usable? Pricing is said to be trending to $300, so this is a lot less expensive than...

Olympus warned of possible share delisting

Ahh, Olympus, how could you mess up so badly??? What a scandal! What happened? The first hint of trouble came when a new President resigned after only two weeks on the job. He was asking for an explanation of an outrageously high commission paid to a mysterious Cayman Islands company to...

    Panny 7x14 or Oly 9x18 m4/3?

If you get the 7-14mm lens and Zen dome, you need a special zoom ring. Reef Photo has a shim that fits the lens and allows you to use the zoom ring for the original 14-42 lens (not the ring for the type II lens, that's different). I did not see where anybody confirmed this, so I'm just...

    Olympus 45mm

I read about this, but I don't see the appeal. F1.8 speed perhaps? I'm not sure what port to use, standard one I suppose. I have been hoping to get a macro M4/3 50mm F2 lens if they would ever make it, but this is not it. I suppose it could be used with wet macro lenses. I bought the...

    Ikelite XZ-1 housing now available

Another poster has already explained that Ikelite's housing enables you to use Ikelite strobes in actual TTL mode. But the downside is that only Ikelite proprietary strobes work. They do have the advantage of saving camera battery power and giving fast recycle time. However, they are bulky...

Subic Bay - 17th Jul - 2 divers missing on USS New York

The visibility near the New York varies. It is near a river mouth, and Subic Bay currents tend to move the silt around a lot. I have dove down to the wreck and had to call off the dive because the viz outside the wreck was about 1 meter, due to silt. Other days it was clear, and I made a few...

    No PEN housings from Ikelite

Ike was so late with the housing anyway they missed the market for housings for the E-PL1 and E-PL2. Perhaps Olympus dropping the full sized 4/3 product line was a factor. It was probably a difficult choice, so many cameras, so little time. Ike really likes to sell strobes, hardwired...
