a few near misses & lessons learned from a recreational scuba diver

I realize this is quoting an old post, but think it bears mentioning. There is a third option. Rather than swim along side the rocks or try to chase the group through a maze of turns, you could go above the rocks and likely either see them from or their bubbles from the higher vantage point...

Efficient way to take your dive plans from the PC to the water

I've always found storing them in my brain to be fairly convenient.

    How do YOU keep fit?

The GUE swim requirements aren't particularly herculean. The pace of the rec requirement is 1.2 kph / .73 mph. I believe it's meant to be attainable to people who don't swim regularly as a form of exercise. In 14 minutes, it's 275m for rec classes, 375m for level 1 tech/cave, 450m for level 2...

    How do YOU keep fit?

That regimen maybe. I just swim through (generally all freestyle), though. If I'm in the water by 12, I can do 1800y, take a quick shower, stop somewhere on the way to pick up lunch (calling ahead as soon as I get out of the pool) and be back right around 1. It is more than an hour with the...

    How do YOU keep fit?

Where do you swim? You still at NG Redondo? I'm in the R9 building. I swim at the pool by hawthorne highscool at lunch time (lap swim opens at noon). Want to join sometime? It's about time we actually meet.

    How do YOU keep fit?

I swim 3-4 times a week, generally a mile each time, sometimes more or less depending on how much time I have. That and weight training.

What do you think about Advanced Open Water Diver Certification?

Like the myriad of complaints about "DIR", I think people assign too much value to what dive classes or philosophies are called.

What do you think about Advanced Open Water Diver Certification?

And, I believe that most agencies have text akin to "or equivalent" in their requirements, for which experience often counts. I have at least two certs which directly require "advanced open water or equivalent," and both instructors accepted experience in lieu of that cert (which I do not hold).

Is "learning the hard lesson" necessary?

Just to be clear I wasn't arguing your point; I think it has a lot of validity. Just wanted to say that the boat and the diver both being there isn't enough ;) We finished the deco. With O2 it was only circa 15 minutes. We didn't have the upline though and surfaced much further from the boat...

Is "learning the hard lesson" necessary?

In my scenario (which is posted a couple places), I simultaneously lost the upline, my light (primary died because the connector detached from the battery; dropped a backup) and my dive team while diving with an obligation at night in poor viz (roughly a foot where we were decoing) with heavy...

    UTD Overhead Protocols Class Report

That may have been an impetus to split what was once a 5 day class into two 3 day classes (without an additional charge): get the blind stuff out of the way before going into an overhead. It also facilitates teaching the commonalities between Cave and Wreck at the 'Protocols' level and leaving...

    UTD Overhead Protocols Class Report

I'll add my 2 cents. At least in my experience, the mechanical skills such as using a reel were the least of the course. Fundamentally, Sheck Exley's rules for survival + 1 are taught, as are protocol for blind communication on a line, lost buddy, lost line, etc. But once you hit the water, it...

Is "learning the hard lesson" necessary?

I imagine every situation is different. I've only felt anything approaching panic while diving once, and I don't know if that experience would in any way play into another.

    cave depths

Fortunately not any more. But I am lucid enough that I'd take a free trip to the red sea in exchange for a questionable open water class. After all, I'm a certified diver ;)
