Monterey conditions. (let's keep it going )

Wesley and I escaped the heat by going to Point Lobos today (Wednesday), and it was a gorgeous day for diving. As we were swimming out of the cove, it felt like being in an inland lake: the water was dead calm. It was unusually clear inside the cove--perhaps 30' of visibility--so we had great...

Monterey conditions. (let's keep it going )

Dave, Thanks for the report. Wesley and I are going to Lobos Wednesday, so now I know what to expect.

Monterey conditions. (let's keep it going )

I was there for the unveiling and was glad I'd left my dive gear at home. The cove looked OK, but once you got out of the cove it looked pretty nasty. I think I'll wait until Tuesday, when the swells are forecast for less than 3'!

    Tulamben ... how?

I am a little puzzled about this business of a "dive guide". Everybody I see posting here talks about having a guide, and when I look at the resorts they are also promoting it. Why? I want somebody leading me around about like I want a case of some dread disease. My wife and I have...

Local Instructor Heartbroken Over Lost Gear...PLEASE HELP!

If you post this to ba_diving you'll hit more divers who are likely to go to Ballbuster then you'll find here on Scubaboard. Chuck Tribolet may already have done this for you, but I won't know until tomorrow because I get ba_diving in digest form. Bruce PS I trust the "it" in the sentence, "My...

    Expected Conditions August Channel Islands

With a group that large, you should look into renting a house on Catalina. There a lots of them there, all within walking distance of everything, and with a group like that the cost per person is very reasonable. You can shore dive at Casino Point with an easy entry/exit, clear water, and be...

    Suit size?

My wife had a CF300 we bought new from a local dealer. We got a great deal on it, and she absolutely loved it. But one day (about 3 years after she got the suit) just as we started a 4 day liveaboard trip in the Channel Islands the suit leaked like a sieve. We searched everywhere for the...

Florida diver looking for diving buddies in Monterey

If you have a mask you're used to using, bring it. A rental mask is never going to fit you like your own. And bring your own computer, if for no other reason so that you can start getting used to it. A full rental package with 2 tanks will run you about $75, and that price is much less than...

    Expected Conditions August Channel Islands

Wesley and I take a 4 day Vision trip every year in either late August or early September. As you said, there are no guarantees, but we almost always have great visibility (60' or more). The one semi-exception I can recall was one dive at Farnsworth where it looked like pea soup as we went...

    Dive site recommendations

You will almost certainly have better visibility at Pt. Lobos than at Lover's. Lover's can still be an interesting place to dive, though. It's more interesting if you go out at Lover's #3, which is the set of steps just to the west of the point, than if you go out Lover's #1, which is the...

I would if I could...but I can't. I have a very nasty doctor's appointment Monday afternoon. I'll be with you in spirit, Muben! Bruce

Open Water Certification - Dive Operator Recommendation?

Wimp! On a great day, Monterey is far better diving than Grand Cayman. If your boys do their open water dives in GC, they will probably never learn to dive cold water and so will miss out on the great diving you have right in your back yard. They really should finish their course in San Jose...

What's your latest departure story from GCM?

I just got back to SFO tonight at 9 p.m., starting from Little Cayman this morning. The airport on Grand Cayman was certainly busy, but it was all well-organized and things moved smoothly. My biggest hassle was trying to connect to the Wi-Fi hub in the departure lounge. Bruce

Beepin uwatec == messy evening REAL SOON NOW

I strongly disagree with this sentiment. Frankly, it's a cheap shot at Scubapro which is totally unwarranted. I owned a dive shop for 7 years and was a Scubapro dealer. Their warranty service was unsurpassed by any other vendor I represented. It is so good, in fact, that there are lots of...

    Questions about Strobes for Monterey

Recently my ancient DS50 strobe began misbehaving, and over a period of several days the misbehavior became more pronounced. Finally I found I had some salt water intrusion where the TTL cable connects to the strobe. I sent the strobe back to Ikelite for repair, and they pronounced it DOA...

Need a gentle, patient dive operator/intro class for timid newbie!

Diving is a very mental exercise. If you are confidant of yourself and relaxed in the water, you will have no problems with diving. If, on the other hand, you are afraid of it and genuinely believe that the solution is to find a very patient instructor who is good with "timid new divers"...

    Grand Cayman Vacation in March

I would be curious about what finally happened to Spanish Bay. My wife and I stayed there about 1989, and it was obvious that the place was dying then. Later, I talked with Ron Sefton and he told me was the one who started Spanish Bay from scratch, then sold it and moved to Little Cayman. I...

    lcbr

The answer is that conditions will probably be good, but there are no guarantees. October is almost always totally miserable, but after that the weather calms down and dive conditions get better. I still remember one year where it rained every single day during December, but that was a fluke...

THAT would have been a mistake! The Luna is the right computer to have, unless you have a Sol instead.

    Scubapro Mk25/S600 Performance Questions

You should normally dive with the knob fully open. The reg should NOT leak air in this position, and it should not even be close to free-flowing. Your LDS tech should have a magnehelic gauge and be willing to show you that the reg is properly tuned with 1.1 to 1.3 inches of water cracking...
