    Runaway Ascent & 60 Seconds of Terror - A Dive Master's Nightmare

Leaving out a direct Cheech and Chong reference was a conscious decision. The "Where's Dave" title was enough. Also, this is a totally real story and my dive buddy's name was really Dave. So, the title sort of wrote itself. After all, I was raised on Cheech and Chong.

    Runaway Ascent & 60 Seconds of Terror - A Dive Master's Nightmare

My "OMG This is REALLY, REALLY bad" experience got written up and published in DAN's Alert Diver magazine. Alert Diver | Where's Dave?

Advice on where to go pro

I strongly believe that you should train where you dive. If you plan on moving to the tropics for life, then train there.

To what setting do you dial your dry suit dump valve?

I leave mine wide open during the entire dive. When I return to the surface, I close it and add a bit of air to insure positive buoyancy.

    Female fins for frog kicking

99% frog kicker, here. For warm water, I use OMS Slipstreams. For cold water, I use Hollis F-1 "bat fins."

    Drysuit Hood

I HIGHLY recommend getting a custom hood from Otter Bay in Monterey, CA. The owner, Cricket, will work with you to get it just right. Her hoods are more like "neoprene helmets." They keep you very warm. www.otterbaysuits.com

Why YOU Need WetNotes...And a bonus wetnote story

I measure it at 1/8" / 3 mm. I did this a few years ago and I don't remember whether the bungee was sold as metric or imperial.

Why YOU Need WetNotes...And a bonus wetnote story

I have two Croquises attached to my WetNotes via thin bungee. The bungee goes into the cap and there's a small knot underneath. I've never had a problem.

    Optimal Back-Plate and Wing

"Optimal" depends highly upon you and your particular diving. My optimal BP/W system isn't my dive buddy's optimal BP/W system, even when doing the same dives. I have two systems, for different dive conditions, one for tropical and one for cold water.

    Mid range lens recommendation

I make rather constant use of my 14-42 kit lens for my EPM-1. It works very well for "fish portraits."

    Which camera bag?

I really love my Think Tank Airport Commuter. I've taken it on many trips and it doesn't yet show any wear. It carries all my UW photo gear, plus my laptop and my iPad, and it has room for misc. extras that come in handy on a trip. Airport Commuter™

    Compass Preference

The SK8 is the successor model for the now-discontinued SK7. It's available either with a wrist strap or a bungee mount as original equipment. Choose your model accordingly.

    Compass Preference

I'm a big believer in Suunto SK7 or SK8, in a bungee mount (and on the left wrist). That's what I've used for years and what I purchased for my son as soon as he was certified.

    Gear for newly certified diver

The best way to save money on scuba gear is to buy your second set of gear first. Virtually everyone who dives a BP/W started with a jacket style, which is now sitting useless in a closet somewhere.

    SPG vs tank checker gauge

Reminds me of the saying that "A man with a watch always knows what time it is. A man with two watches is never sure."

BP/W for a totally newbie diver?

I started my son off with a BP/W. There's no good reason not to.
