Picking up BP/W setup from the ground?

There's a reason why, early on in the production of Sea Hunt, he asked for balsa wood tanks.

    Advice on Wing/BP brands

I've done that many times. Also, sometimes from small boats it's advisable to put your rig in the water and then exit the boat yourself and don in the water.

    Question about depth / decompression?

Unless you freedive deep and frequently, you don't have to worry about decompression. (Yes, extreme freedivers do have DCS considerations.) However, you DO have dangers, such as blackouts, to worry about. I STRONGLY suggest you take a freediving safety class, where you'll learn the dangers...

    Shore dives setup

I do set up my gear before loading my car/truck to go shore diving. My tank and gear don't roll, because I use a backplate and wing. That saves time at the dive site.

Any SDI instructors on The Big Island of Hawaii?

I won a free e-learning course from SDI. I'm looking for a SDI instructor on The Big Island of Hawaii, in the hope that I can do the in-water portion of a specialty course on my next trip there. The SDI website isn't particularly helpful in that regard.

Urchin cull approved for Monterey reef

    Best I can tell, it’s a standard rock/geologist’s hammer.

Urchin cull approved for Monterey reef

It's my understanding that the biomass of urchins to be "removed" from the ecosystem is far too large to physically haul away. Plus, it will likely be a benefit to the environment if their body parts decompose in situ.

    11 y/o Surfaces with Convulsions

Our lungs can only stand about 1.5 psi of overpressure. If you do the math, you'll find that that is about 4 feet of seawater. Use your standard one atmosphere (15 psi) for 33 feet of seawater.

    11 y/o Surfaces with Convulsions

There's a HUGE difference between ascending with the air you brought down with you in your lungs and air you breathed in at depth. E.g., the air in your lungs at 30' while freediving is half the volume of the air in your lungs at 30' that you just breathed in off of your scuba tank. The...

    Wanted Hollis F1

Agreed. My size 12 feet fit nicely in my XXL F-1s, with either my drysuit built-in boots, or my wetsuit booties.

Kona Manta Ops and Shore Diving Rentals

All of the dive ops are good and none has a boat significantly different from the others. Take your pick. There are freelance shore diving guides. I have never used any there, so I do have any recommendations. But, you REALLY should do a blackwater dive while you're there.

Oh gee, a temporary e-card. Thanks.

Don't be a chump. No need to spend stupid money on a PADI "e-card." Simply scan your physical card(s) and (a) save to your phone and (b) upload to a free cloud account. Mine are all on my free DropBox account. I can access them from anywhere. Total cost? $0.00

    Nissan Rogue commercial with divers

And what is in the pickup bed in front of the divers? That looks like some sort of underwater craft.

Yes, I do. That’s why I keep returning there.

    Big Island Hawaii

You’ll be disappointed if you compare dive locations. Always enjoy what you see, not what isn’t there. That said, Hawaii is far more subtle than the Caribbean. Less color and spectacle. It makes up for it in volcanic topography and endemic species. About 20% of the species you see can be seen...

PADI DM Yearly Cost and Expiration

When looking at insurance costs, don't forget the need for a "tail" when you stop paying the annual premiums because you stop DMing. The policies are "claims made," meaning that they only cover claims made in the policy year. As claims can be brought many years beyond the date of whatever...

Yoke or Din for HP Steel..

I have four "HP" 3442 steel tanks. I used to run yoke with them. But, I had issues with a leak that started up at 100'. I switched to DIN and have never looked back. It's a much better system and it only took about five minutes, including looking for the proper sized wrench in my garage, to...

    Control of purple urchins

That would be great, except for the fact that the damned urchins eat up all the kelp and then go into starvation/stasis mode. They just sit there, without any delicious innards, until some kelp somehow makes into the area and they eat it. Back to starvation/stasis mode. In that mode, they...

    Wrist vs. console computer?

I, too, started with a console. I have used a wrist mounted AI computer for years and love it. I can see my depth, gas and NDL info at a glance and glance at it often. It's on a bungee mount, so no problem donning and doffing. (I also have a brass & glass SPG clipped to my left waist D-ring...

    New Genesis 2.0

Or use a plastic milk crate. I cut round(ish) divots on each side and lined with pool noodle and zipties. I use a bungee cord to "lock" it into place. I also ziptied a tank boot on the bottom, so I can stand the scooter nose down.
