DIVE DRY WITH DR. BILL #897: YET ANOTHER MYSTERY

Has no one collected some of the "yellow snot," kept in a controlled environment and observed what hatched?

    The PADI Wheel

Still have mine. I can use dive tables just fine, but it'd take some refreshing to use the Wheel.

If you could change one thing about dive training...

My one change would be simple. NEVER teach anything on your knees. Trim and buoyancy from the start as fundamentals, not add-on niceties.

An odd question, is anyone using their DPV without scuba gear?

I've done it. I call it "power snorkeling." It's fun. I use a mountaineering harness to clip my DPV to. This one, to be precise. Couloir - Black Diamond Gear

Newly Certified Diver - Back Inflated BCD or Wing?

When I was in your situation, some 500 dives ago, I purchased a back-inflate BC. Right around dive 100, I switched to a BP/W and never looked back. I highly recommend that you save money on scuba gear by buying your second set of gear first. Get the BP/W.

What is the brand of this backplate?

Hmm. Great quest. I tried to find it in the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office database and couldn't find this mark, searching through scuba uses. Alas, that wouldn't apply to other countries.

Any Big Island ops doing a manta/black water double header?

It's too bad that no one is doing this anymore. I loved Kona Honu's Manta/Black Water combo back in the day.

    Wing sizing?

There is no "one wing to rule the others." You should plan on getting a smaller wing (say 18-20# for tropical diving with a 3 mm suit with a single tank) and a large wing (say 30-40# for cold water diving with 7 mm farmer john or drysuit and a single tank). When / if you go to double tanks...

10 Years on From Fatal Dive - Lessons to be Learnt

There's no reason for night dives to be either shorter or longer than day dives at the same site. There is often lots to see, as critter who "hide" during the day are often active at night and visa versa.

    Unit doff/don question

An EXCELLENT question! When I was a newbie, I was diving in a 7mm Farmer John and conventional BC with integrated weights. I needed a ton of lead, all of which was in my weight pockets. Just like the industry "said." One day, I got entangled in some bull kelp off the Sonoma (Calif.) coast...

    Pencil dilemma

I've found Croquis(es) to be very reliable underwater. You can even put some thin bungee through the top and knot it off. Makes it very secure.

    Poacher caught at Catalina Island

Why no gigantic fine (and/or confiscation of dive gear / boat)? Why no jail time? The actions were egregious and he'd been warned. He deserves more than a "permanent no-no." He's already proved that he doesn't care about "no-no"s.

    Should I buy a nitrox (O2) analyzer?

Even if you dive at home, you're going to have to get your nitrox fills from a dive shop or a dive boat. Each will have an analyzer for you to use when you get your tank back.

    Travel gear?

Do NOT get an integrated inflator/octo for California diving. I had such a system and when I had an actual need to share air with my buddy, we could only go up, right into the middle of large giant kelp bed. It took a very long time and much needless effort to do the kelp crawl to our boat...
