"If Only..." By The Human Diver

Many tech divers there wear drysuits, as they get cold after a lot of diving. What's warm to us cold water divers, isn't so warm for the locals.

What is your favorite "Rig.? B.C. BP/W Horse Collar or ?????

I dive a BP/W. For cold water diving, I have a DSS plate with DSS plate weights and Oxycheq 40# extreme wing. For tropical diving, I use a Fred T plate with an Oxycheq 18# camo wing (ironically, so my gear will stand out against everyone else's black gear).

Ah. A medical conference at the Westin Hapuna. My wife will be there the week after you're there for a medical conference and I'll be diving when she's conferencing. I've dove Kona side of the Big Island many times, both shore and boat and I'd like to help. The best shore diving close to...

    Kauai May 7-13

I'm a big fan of Fathom Five, in old Koloa Town. They run a boat out of the nearby harbor, shore dives at Koloa Landing and, in the season, Tunnels Beach on the north side.

Looking for advice; cutter instead of knife?

I'm not an instructor, but I always carry a short, cutoff steak knife, a Trilobite cutter and a pair of trauma shears. Use the appropriate tool for the appropriate situation. Not need to limit yourself.

Make Every Dive a Training Dive

Yep. I'm SO happy that I "fell into" a group of divers that practice their skills. I consider that a major part of my scuba education.

    Monterey OW Cert

I was certified in Monterey, in a driving January rainstorm. I was thoroughly soaked just getting my wetsuit on and we had to pass the Coast Guard filing sandbags on the beach (to combat the local flooding). In other words, the weather was terrible. Nonetheless, I was never bothered by the...

    DCS? Bends? AGE?

I'm no doc, but I do know that if you held your breath on the way up, from as little as six feet, you could have issues. I would seek another opinion from a well-qualified physician who really understands dive injuries.

    Who has performed a rescue?

I have. On a boat dive in Monterey, I encountered a solo diver from the same boat who was very, very low on air. I put him on my main reg (with a 7' hose) and we made a safe assent. At the surface, he had enough of his tank air to inflate, which he did, but thereafter panicked. He took off his...

May I respectfully and STONGLY suggest that you do your checkout dives here (in Monterey) and then you will not only a certified diver by the time you hit the Big Island and will be ready some great diving, and not have to be relegated to doing skills instead of enjoying the Hawaiian critters...
