It all depends on what temps you are climatized to. I'm climatized to the Fl temps and I dive in a t-shirt in 74F spring water. Anything colder than that and I use a wet suit. I see Canadian tourists swimming in the Gulf during the winter when the water temps are in the 50s and they seem fine in...
I feel lucky because the el cheapo US Divers/Aqualung masks that are sold in stores like w mart fit ne better than the expensive masks sold at dive stores.
It's all about the fit and not the price or name.
The military used mufflers aka diffusers. It is mostly to reduce bubble size so they won't be easy to see on the surface. I saw a picture of one and it looked like a small engine muffler with a lot of small holes drilled in it. A muffler for a lawnmower or a valve cover breather cap for a car...
Amen to that. Webbing is inexpensive. All you need to complete the harness is a buckle and a couple tri glides and D rings. A deluxe harness is not an improvement over a standard harness IMO.
If you feel like you want more padding or pockets, etc. you can always upgrade and add them to the...
Ican'ttelliftheOxy is a hard pack or a soft pack. If it's a hard pack it really only needs one band to hold the tank in place.
If the Oxy is soft pack I think you would bebetter off with a blow mold plastic back pack like the XS.
I use a plastic back pack quite frequently, with and without a wing. They are comfortable, light weight and have handles that make lugging the tank around easier.
If you look around you can find these used but in great condition with the webbing, buckles and tank strap for under $50.

Nobody spray paints their fins anymore?
I have my initials in yellow on my jets. Yellow because that was the color I had on hand at the time. White is better. People can see them in low vis and know who I am too. And it makes them easy to pick out if they get mixed in a pile with other fins...
Possibly, but they may have also come in the ballast tanks of ships that came from an area where they are native. That has happened with other invasive species.
I know the Healrhways plate you are talking about. Iy is black with rounded corners and looks nothing like this one.
The plates I am talking about are identical except they don't have the big S stamped on them. People are listing them on feebay as Healthways plates. I think they are mistaken...
I'm still interested. I have rounded the search down to about 3 or 4 possible candidates. Dick Bonin, Lamonica of JBL fame, Lloyd Bridges (there is a picture of him wearing what may be this harness but it is hard to tell) and Lacoque are just a few of the names that keep coming up.
The clues...
"...All I know about it is that it was introduced prior to 1960. It is last seen in the Sportsways catalog of 1960..."
Thanks Simonbeans! That is the kind of info that is useful to me. Now the hunt is on for 1960 and earlier Sportsways catalogs. If I could find a patent number I would be ecstatic.
Thanks for posting that. I live near Tarpon Springs, FL and there used to be a large sponge diving industry there. Tarpon Springs was also the location for much of the filming used in the 1953 movie, Beneath The 12 Mile Reef. Beneath the 12-Mile Reef - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia...
"...AFAIK Yoke connections cannot be used with 300 bars. Yoke connections are limited to 200 bars..."
Correct. There are no yoke valves rated to 300bar. But there are two types of DIN valves, one rated to 200bar and another rated to 300bar. A reg with a 300bar DIN connector can be used on...
