Help on picking out a new wing

Thank you all very much for your replies. It seems like the consensus is to go with an Oxycheq wing, which is what I’m going to do. Thanks again!

    Peacock Line

I agree with not leaving the gold line, but the situation at pothole is a little different. It’s a T, where one direction is straight up, and daylight IS visible. It is easily arguable that going further is safe for a single tank intro cave diver. And the NSS standard you just cited doesn’t...

Regulator for Twin and cold water...Which one??

Poseidon Xtreams. They’re amazing regs. Plus they don’t need the plastic anti-freeze caps like the Jetstreams do.

    drysuit pockets

The new balanced aluminum pee-valve from Dive Rite is terrific. Just like the old stainless valve, but much much much lighter. At $180 they’re a little pricey, but well worth it.

    Is there to much protection

3mm. in 70 degree water? BRRRRRRRRR. That's drysuit diving for me. ;)

    Your Ideal Back Inflated Wing?

In order to avoid hijacking this thread, I’ve started a new thread asking for suggestions as to what wing might meet some of the needs I’ve got. http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=92021 My post does include a description of my ideal wing though, so I thought I’d post here as well...

Help on picking out a new wing

A previous thread, “Your ideal back inflated wing,” ( http://www.scubaboard.com/t85168-your-ideal-back-inflated-wing.html ) got me thinking about the subject of a new wing. I could really use some help finding a wing for ocean diving with doubles. Basically what I want is a Dive Rite Classic...

    air in nitrox tank?

If the tank is just rated for premix, you can put either air or nitrox in it. Switch back and forth all you want, it doesn't matter. If the tank is O2 clean for partial pressure nitrox blending, anything you put in it needs to come from an 02 clean compressor. (This can include just putting...

    Key Largo diving/lodging

I like Kelly’s on the Bay. Boats are probably a little larger than what you seem interested in, but they’re not cramped. DM doesn’t go in the water. The nice part about the operation is that you can stay right there. Walk out of your room and 50 feet away is a nice continental breakfast...

All I can say is I hate drysuits!

Here’s my experience with drysuits: After 5 dives I HATED the thing. After 10 dives I didn’t hate it, but didn’t like it either. After 15 dives I was sort of okay with it. After 30 dives I like it, but it still needs some work. I suspect I won’t be totally comfortable with it until I hit...

What is the Best Dive Reel?

Halcyon. Halcyon. And oh yeah, Halcyon. Their reels are unbeatable IMO - I wouldn’t own anything else for a primary or larger. I also have one of their finger spools as my safety. For jump/gap, I think I’d probably go with Dive-Rite. Oh yeah, I’m not DIR, and I’m still evangelizing for...

    Swimming 400 m in 10 mins.

If you’re looking for good books on technique and training, I have a couple of suggestions: Dr. Phillip Whitten “The Complete Book of Swimming” Terry Laughlin “Total Immersion: The Revolutionary Way to Swim Better, Faster, and Easier”

    Tendonitis and fins

I have runner’s knee in both knees - not really sure if it’s iliotibial band or patellar. Anyway, when diving dry, I’ve found that open patella neoprene braces really help. That and stretching. Very important. Good luck!

Too soon to do Advanced and Rescue Diver?

I’m a firm believer that AOW can/should be taken soon after OW. Rescue is for later. AOW would be best taken in your own equipment however. I would suggest that you buy gear and get a few dives in with it before taking advanced. Doesn’t have to be many dives, just enough that you’re...

Which BCD do you think is most suitable for Tek diving?

Singles: Transpac with Venture Wing Doubles: BP/W I am NOT at ALL a fan of a backplate for singles... If you're diving doubles, you need the stability (and a bigger wing).

    Diving Concepts UltraFlex Pro

DC won't put pee valves on suits anymore. Too many complaints about placement... Had my LDS put one of Dive-Rite's new balanced aluminum pee valves on my DC suit, and I LOVE it. Much lighter than the old stainless valves.

    Federal Standard RR-C-901c

Your question piqued my interest, so I did a little research. Federal Specification RR-C-901C is incorporated into 49 CFR 171.7 by reference. According the CFR, the specification was promulgated on Jan 15, 1981 by the GSA Specification Office. Now, because of this, it should have been...

    Hose Routing with Poseidon Regs

One inflator from each first stage - left post for the primary inflator. Drysuit from the right post. (You want your drysuit on the opposite post as your primary inflator.) That way, if you have to shut down a valve, you still have one inflator plus possibly your drysuit. Some argue that...

AL100s? Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down?

If I’m traveling and the dive operator has AL100s, I’ll rent them rather than 80s. Generally this means I’m staying shallow or I’m going to do some light deco. (No reason to waste the gas). They do have pretty crappy buoyancy characteristics however, and I wouldn’t buy an AL 100. I’ve got...

    Tuning a regulator??

David, You’ve committed no cardinal sin. I don’t know if Apeks sends their regs from the factory tuned or untuned. If they send them tuned, you’re golden. If they’re untuned, I would get them tuned. I would do so at another shop. (Does anyone on the board know if Apeks sends their regs...
