Galapagos Scuba Diving Fatality - February 12, 2010 - Eloise Gale

I have to applaud everyone on the sensible discussion that has emerged from this tragedy. So if I may : thanks. I think that there is no obvious way that a group discussion can emerge from this venue which will impact on either the licensing agencies or the live aboard companies. For...

Galapagos Scuba Diving Fatality - February 12, 2010 - Eloise Gale

Sure Stichus, I both understand and agree. But my point relates to "collective" understanding, responsibility and preventative action from both the divers and the dive operation.

Galapagos Scuba Diving Fatality - February 12, 2010 - Eloise Gale

I think these arguments are all very sensible, and I agree to a large extent. However, if we assume that the weakest link is the diver, whether it be due to over extending themselves, inexperience, panic, aberrant situation etc, the fact remains that this raises the issue of how to prevent...

Galapagos Scuba Diving Fatality - February 12, 2010 - Eloise Gale

DAN or not, the truth is that in these far off areas, if medical people are on board they often have to improvise, just as we may have to do aboard an airliner. It is the readiness and preparedness of the vessel and crew that can transform a chaotic situation into one where the person has a chance.

Galapagos Scuba Diving Fatality - February 12, 2010 - Eloise Gale

With discussions focusing upon safety, diver preparedness etc, there may be another issue worth bringing up, and that is live aboard preparedness. While we all salivate over pictures of azure waters with large beasts, it is very rare to include any remarks regarding on board or available safety...

Galapagos Scuba Diving Fatality - February 12, 2010 - Eloise Gale

It sounds like the conditions were exceedingly challenging. While it may well have been panic, I do not believe that it was necessarily "cut and dried" as suggested. With the rate of air consumption described, hyperventilation could well have contributed to changes in blood chemistry and...

Scubapro X650 vs newer SP regs

That would be cool. Like REI or other outdoor companies provide days to trial their kayaks etc. Just imagine : a weekend of equipment try outs held by Scubapro, Aqualung, etc in some of the major cities, or down by the beach somewhere. Do you hear that equipment manufacturers?

Aggressor II to Galapagos - DO NOT GO ON IT.

I appreciate the author of the original thread bringing this to the board. Clearly there are going to be a lot of different opinions and levels of tolerance for the issues raised. But professionalism is the very least that is not only expected, but due the guests of a live aboard or any tourist...

Scubapro X650 vs newer SP regs

In the original blurb/comparison between the x650 and other regs, they refer to "super high flow" for the x650 vs only "high flow" for the other regs. Is this real? Does this refer to the inhalational cycle?

Scubapro X650 vs newer SP regs

Hi all, I own a SP X650 reg, and while there was a lot of unfortunate mis steps by SP at it's introduction,( appearance not withstanding), I can say that it's breathing characteristics have been superb. I'm not sure which aspects of the second stage contribute to this as I think it's one of the...

Atomic Aquatics "Smoke on the Water"

I have a pair and also a pair of Scubapro split fins. I have to say that at first I noticed that they were heavier than the Scubapros but were much more efficient in strong current. I could actually negotiate current rather than struggle. So from that point of view they have proven to be pretty...

Galapagos v.s. Cocos Island in July

Ironic question since I've been debating this very topic for the last few months. I managed to contact a close friend who is a pro underwater photog. He agrees that June-August are prime Cocos times. He worked on the live aboards and dived therefor many years. In fact we decided to head out...

    Galileo Sol v.s. Suunto D9 ?

I have both the D9 and the Sol, and I have to say that the Sol far exceeds the D9. The D9 was interfered with by adjacent wireless Suunto devices and was a constant headache during the synching phase, which in and of itself is a huge pain with the Suunto. Additionally, for "maturing" divers...

    Diving and Cancer Question

Glad to hear that you're still thinking about diving. In terms of the ramifications of NHL therapy, the questions are related to cardio pulmonary function. In other words, did he undergo radiation therapy to his lungs, or receive chemo which would potentially effect his heart and lungs. If the...

We would joke that you could always tell when you had the hotel room next to an MD's ; because you could hear him call out his own name during ämore". I'm a Hyperbaric and Critical Care Doc,( artifical life support for burns, trauma, surgery and cardiac surgery).
