DIR- GUE Spool to SMB attachment

I indeed keep it attached during dives where it might be necessary to deploy the SMB. During training or if I intend to do a skills and drills dive I do not pre-attach the spool and SMB.

    Dutch scuba fans?

Went went to the Boschmolenplas a week ago to meet some people there that where interested in our Divertug DPV's. Visibility was not that great, specially in the diving area. It was really busy which doesn't help I guess . It got better at depth but there it became chilly after a while...

    Dutch scuba fans?

We just drove by, but the parking was full. We'll try again in about 30 mins. Landenouse was really nice this morning, we where the first to arrive. Visibility was pretty good.

Passed my GUE Cave 1 course in France yesterday :). Really enjoyed the course even though it was hard work sometimes. We're staying a few extra days so we can already log some experience dives.

How to carry the primary mask

I usually clip the mask with a double ender at my right D-ring.

    DIR- GUE Reflections on Fundamentals

Exactly. Like mentioned before, some people just need more time or a slower pace to get things right. Is it really that terrible to start from scratch even if the ultimate goal is technical diving? If there are just a few (minor) things that need improving then it shouldn’t be a problem to...

    DIR- GUE Reflections on Fundamentals

Question: If someone feels like they aren't ready yet and need more time to develop the necessary skills then why not start with GUE Rec 1? Here this course can take up to about 4 months so there is way more time to practice and less pressure to get everything right instantly. Me and my partner...

    Dutch scuba fans?

We signed up for DAN a couple of years ago when we started travelling to remote locations in the Philipines and Indonesia. Some resorts there require DAN or something similar. Never needed it but should something happen I know they will help me without questions asked. Technical diving is also...

    Dutch scuba fans?

Currently we do 2 - 3 dives a week. We also joined the Aalscholvers diveteam which helps. They organize a lot of dives at different locations which is nice. This winter we got ourselves heating so now we are even more comfortable all year round. The small wrecks are not really that...

    Dutch scuba fans?

Correct, it is not mandatory to use a drysuit and doubles. As I had been diving for 20 years I started to lose interest. Diving in NL was something we rarely did anymore. To make things more fun again we decided to do a wreck diving specialty. Our instructor recommended to take fundies so...

    Dutch scuba fans?

Welcome! I took the course with De Aalscholvers (Martijn Blommaert) almost a year ago. Indeed they don't do courses on Saturday because of the shop, usually fundies is planned from Sunday to Wednesday. For us this wasn't a problem. Before the course he also gave us some good advice about our...

    Drysuit use and buoyancy

When I started diving with a drysuit I was told to use the suit for buoyancy instead of my bcd. Didn't work for me. Nowadays I use just enough air to take care of the squeeze, which is also enough for insulation. More air eventually just ends up in my feet which makes it hard to maintain a...

    Dutch scuba fans?

Congrats with your Nitrox certification. I have been diving a lot in local lakes, also this weekend and here (Noord-Brabant) visibility was still pretty good. Next weekend we'll go to Germany for a cavern intro in the Nuttlar. Glad it's finally going to happen after the trip had to be...

Advice requested: Packing scuba gear for air travel?

We use "soft" bags to reduce the total amount of weight. Fins go on the bottom. Our wing, regs, mask etc. then go in a drysuit bag which we place on top of the fins. Usually we wrap the regs in a towel for some extra "protection". We use the neoprene items (boots, suit) and our clothes to fill...

What proportion of scuba divers can equalize ears "no hands"?

I can, I rarely have to use my hands (maybe it takes a little more effort after I have had a cold). My method works similar to what TMHeimer described. My partner always has to use his hands but he is more prone to develop ear problems anyway.

Some of the most epic diving destinations!

Totally agree with Raja Ampat and Komodo. Haven't been to Chuck so can't comment on that. Anilao is indeed nice but certainly not epic. The Galapagos is still on my bucket list.

DPV and buoyancy change with depth

I agree that the compression will be minimal. It was just mentioned in the GUE DPV 1 course notes as something to take into account :).

DPV and buoyancy change with depth

I was taught that it depends on the DPV. From my theory notes: Some DPV's may have slight changes in buoyancy at different depths due to O-ring compression. The DPV's I have used so far (Divertug, Suex) never had this issue.
