    Info SCTLD closures on Bonaire

Dont confuse their country, their rules with bad science. I've never commented on the rules only the psuedo-science they are using. I was being polite calling it psuedo-science. Does bad science sound better? "STINAPA says the spread was slowed." Based on what data? Uncontrolled rinse...

Iberostar or Villa Aldora for family with non-diving kids?

Iberostar is a pretty unique resort. You will not feel like you are at a big hotel. The "rooms" are 1 or 2 story huts. You are surrounded by jungle and ocean. Peacocks roam the grounds. Big iguanas. Many tropical birds including flamingos. If you can afford to and do stay there you should...

Iberostar or Villa Aldora for family with non-diving kids?

Iberostar is for families and the kids will love it. You can snorkel at Iberostar. It is mostly sand grass beds but you can find interesting things if you look. Go "left" facing the ocean (head South) down the beach. There is a house with a very sandy entry in front of it. No one is...

    Cozumel travel

The big difference for me is the flight landing in Coz gets me to my hotel by 1pm ish. If I bag drag its 4-5ish. Since I want to dive the next day, that puts Coz ahead hands down.

    Info SCTLD closures on Bonaire

Not to burst any bubbles, but there is a second way to interpret the above. They "impacted" corals are dead, covered in other algae and thus undetectable as a diseased coral. Buddy was Red in May and SCTLD was very present. The disease moves fast. When it hit Cozumel, it was present...

Difference between Yellow and Red site?

It is not surprising that green, yellow and red are all blurring together. Do remember this disease hits hard and fast. Based on experience at other islands, it will be over at Bonaire in 6 months as all corals impacted will be wiped out. Those coral skeletons will become part of the reef...

    Local News

This conversation is interesting. I was in Punta Cana a couple weeks back at a resort with amazing beaches....covered in sargassam. I am almost positive this place built its reputation based on its beaches. But the time I was there, no one was at the beach. I kept asking myself why go to...

The best way to handle/train with currents, Cozumel trip

One tip I have not seen here is to dive with an extra 1-2 lbs. This way if you need to, you can drop air from your BCD and stick in the sand easier or behind a behind a coral head. Once you get more comfortable in the currents, you can shed it.

That is GREAT info to share. Thank you. But if she had just mentioned how she got bent it would have been a perfect story.

Fast Moving Coral Disease Alert on Bonaire

They are just a dead rock on the reef. So they get covered with the macro algae and the purple coralline algae. I am just stating it isn't a bleached white coral skeleton sitting there. Its almost as if the corals never existed and the disease never happened.

Fast Moving Coral Disease Alert on Bonaire

Cozumel never recovered. All the corals the disease could impact were wiped out. They are covered in other growth now. This also happened very fast and the reef closures didnt help. We were there in the Spring and nearly all the corals were infected to some degree. By a return in Fall they...

Fast Moving Coral Disease Alert on Bonaire

We stayed at Buddy Dive. Buddy has a giant map of the dive sites at their drive thru. Each site had a round color sticker. All the rules I shared above were communicated during the resort orientation.

Fast Moving Coral Disease Alert on Bonaire

I just got back this weekend from a week there. They have 2 simultaneous and sort of contradicting rules in effect. They didnt really bother us but YMMV. -They ask you to stick to one zone per day: North, South, Center or Klein per day. -They ask you to dive orange sites last per day...

Fast Moving Coral Disease Alert on Bonaire

Ok, but where is the evidence that divers spread it and any of the precautions people recommend for divers halt the spread? I stand by my statement there is no scientific basis for any of the precautions being recommended and will gladly stand corrected when referenced a peer reviewed article.

Fast Moving Coral Disease Alert on Bonaire

None of this gear sanitizing is scientifically relevant as if there are not currents. These dive sites are not isolated pools just because they have unique names. Divers likely didnt cause this and divers wont fix it nor will they make it worse. Cozumel closed whole sites and it did...

Fast Moving Coral Disease Alert on Bonaire

Based on the pictures, Cozumel went through this a few years ago. Its sad to see. Cozumel closed whole dive sites on a whim to try to stop it. It didn't. It was very fast moving and wiped out those impacted corals in a year. This year next time people will say Bonaire is much improved...

    Cozumel in early September ?

Oh yea you will be fine then. Those are my favorite sites but they are deeper and you will be fine skipping for your first trip. Like they say, a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work.

    Cozumel in early September ?

The problem with Sept is not the hurricanes but that in Aug-Sept the best dive sites are closed. YMMV...
