    General Vortex Incident Discussion

Could I just add a vote for keeping the thread here (or somewhere generally accessible)? I realise there's a lot of dross in it and a lot of info that is mind-bogglingly basic stuff for trained cave divers, but as a novice diver who's interested in pursuing cavern training once my skills are up...

    Smoking, equipment and AOW

Question for the other smoking divers out there, do you smoke before a dive? I'm a moderate smoker, but I don't smoke on the day of a dive until it's over, and usually not the night before either (as with drinking). I've dived with people who'll have a couple of durries on the way to the...

    Rent or Buy

Personally, I bought gear reasonably quickly (after about 10 dives); a cheap BCD first, followed by good regs and a basic computer. Prior to that, I had a couple of lousy rental regulator experiences (the clinching one sprayed a fine mist of water with each breath and I coughed for a week)...

    OK, who smokes?

I smoke about 5-10 a day. I don't smoke before dives though (or heavy exercise) because I think it's asking for trouble. I'll sometimes have a couple the evening after a dive but I try to leave it at that.

Safety in Numbers??? -- Beware of Virtual Solo Diving

I think the divers here are all pretty motivated, because we take the time to subscribe to a bulletin board to chat and learn more about diving. However, there are a lot of divers out there that are either happy to be bad, or don't realise that their skills are lacking until something untoward...

Safety in Numbers??? -- Beware of Virtual Solo Diving

The trouble is, if you are a new diver like myself (24 dives) and don't have a partner or friends who dive, you are pretty much stuck with this situation. Once you have a couple of dives, IME the DMs on boats will pair you up with an instabuddy of the same experience level. If they're a good...

Ningaloo - Whale shark overnight trip

G'day, I dived with Ningaloo Whaleshark'n'Dive last year (scuba and whaleshark snorkel) and they were great, no complaints at all. If I went back to Exmouth I would rebook with them. I haven't done that particular overnight trip though. regards W

    Quarry or Lake??

I'd like to thank you all for the info, like Nudediver I come from a place without flooded quarries. I knew people dived them for practice, but I had no idea they were so deep and had so much interesting stuff. Now I wanna see the 727 jet...

    Comparing Diving to Flying

As a novice in both disciplines I agree, there are many similarities between diving and flying (ten dives, about 50 flying hours). All your points are valid. IMHO, the most fundamental similarities between the two are the following mindsets that apply to both: I am in control of my...

    Two divers missing Whitsunday Islands

Diary contradicts dramatic story by rescued divers Neely and Dalton | The Courier-Mail From today's Courier Mail (the primary Brisbane paper). There still seems to be doubt as to what time the authorities were notified. No doubt it will all come out in the wash  What is also...
