November to April, though the actual dates vary from year to year.

Interesting that you mention Lucinda Dive; I also got a recommendation for them from a local diver on a recent Cairns trip. They sound like they're worth checking out!

    Dream Vacation

I've driven from Brisbane to Sydney return several times, and Brisbane to Cooktown return twice. I've also driven many of the western and remote highways in Qld and NSW, but unless someone finds a cave system out there you won't find any diving on them. Brisbane to Sydney is a relatively easy...

2 days of diving in Cairns. Recommendations?

I dived with Silverswift recently on a day trip out of Cairns, and it was great. They divided the certified divers into groups based on experience, and my group included a DM and a very experienced guy. The newly certified divers were all together. The day dives out of Port Douglas are also...

    Collecting Narcosis Stories

The only time I've knowingly been narc'd was at 35m and swimming against a strong current. My buddy was an instructor and fitter than me, so he was a bit further ahead. Suddenly I had this thought that was so strong I almost heard it; 'He's going to leave you here. He's going to leave you to...

    Rocky VS Bundy

There are a mob in Bundy who dive off Agnes Water Home - Bundaberg Aqua Scuba I haven't dived with them but last time I was travelling through Bundy I called in and said g'day (with a view to future trips). They seemed very nice and professional in the shop. I don't know if Rocky's got a dive...

    Advice on sharks & Yongala

I also dived with Yongala dive in 2012 and they were great. I stayed in Ayr (twenty minutes drive away) which is a nice town, albiet small. Bear in mind that it's a half hour trip in an RIB to get there and the day I went it was rough. I wasn't all that nice to be around, and nor were a lot of...

    Yongala vs. Lady Bowen

I haven't dived the Lady Bowen, but the Yongala is a great dive with fabulous marine life. IMO it's well worth the trip to Ayr.

    Diving near Brisbane

Mate, they're a man-eater. Covert though, you never see them coming...Yowies are worse but at least they don't swim. P.S. if you see one, don't teach them how. :crafty: Seriously, another vote for both Sundive at Byron and Nautilus in Brisbane. Bear in mind that the Brisbane dive operators...

Best places to dive anywhere in Oz in July / August

Byron Bay is nice, and if you're travelling with non-divers there's plenty for them to do there too.

ss Yongala and Navy Pier? Why are the operators charging so much!!!!

Unfortunately the state legislation is not dive friendly. IME, even in Brisbane the interesting dives have become Too Hard for the commercial operators. This is not the operators' fault; by the time they try to comply with the State WH&S Codes of Practice it's easier not to go. When I first...

I thought that might have happened, bummer. There were some good surfing swlls though. Enjoy the rest of your trip!

ss Yongala and Navy Pier? Why are the operators charging so much!!!!

The USA has a population of 313 million in 9.8 million square km. Australia has a population of of 22 million in 7.6 million square km. Competition in Australia and competition in the US are two very different animals. It's not a question of blind payment (whether for diving, fuel...

ss Yongala and Navy Pier? Why are the operators charging so much!!!!

Both Ayr and Exmouth (paticularly Exmouth) are reasonably remote, which means that the operator has to pay a lot for fuel and other supplies. As Johann mentions, everything is expensive in northern WA, not just the diving. Partly that's because of a lack of competition (whether in burgers or...

The best place to dive today is tha Abyss car park. The latest report from the car park is good vis, 20c water temp, swell from SE but not much fish life yet! From Abyss Scuba in Sydney.:cool2: Sorry if the weather spoiled your plans, Anthony. It's great conditions for sitting in the pub...

    Australia in July

Are you in Brisbane on a weekend? Weekday dives to Flinders can be a problem; Nautilus and Big Cat Reality go out on Sundays but I don't know of a regular operator who dives it other days of the week... If any other local can provide an option I'd love to know, because I'd be keen to use it...

Moreton Bay and Stradbroke Island diving advice

The first time I dived Byron I nearly got caught myself :dork2:. Fortunately I remembered the night before; if you're driving somewhere relatively close (rather than say, flying to Sydney) it's easy to forget the time changes at the Big Red...Thing on the highway. :rofl3: I dived Byron today...

Moreton Bay and Stradbroke Island diving advice

Remember Qld has no daylight saving and you need to leave an hour earlier. Ie 7am Qld is 8am NSW time. If you do the conversions correctly (it regularly trips people up, including locals) an hour thirty should be okay, but don't cut it any finer IMO; Gold Coast traffic can be unpredictable...

Moreton Bay and Stradbroke Island diving advice

Reminds me of the time I was at a Straddie cake shop during whale season. Some yuppie tourists wandered in and one of them asked the owner 'what time do the whales come past?' The answer; 'When they bloody feel like it. They're not a train service, love'! Exit embarassed yuppies.

Moreton Bay and Stradbroke Island diving advice

+1 for Byron rather than the Gold Coast. The Goldie has some nice enough dives (Cook Island for example) but Byron's got a lot more fish/sharks/miscellaneous swimmy things. It's an easy enough drive down from the Coast (about an hour and a bit) but allow some time to find a park. +1 also...
