    Diving without a mask

By "fine" I mean I can read gauges, etc. with or without a mask. I have never noticed any real difference without a mask, but candor forces me to admit I've never been anywhere with 150 feet of visibility either. 20' is probably the best I've ever been in. Is it distance, near or both that gets...

    Diving without a mask

I have noticed a few comments here and there about a mask being necessary for U/W vision -- things like "a diver without a mask is essentially blind" etc. Am I the only one who can see fine underwater without a mask? I always thought the purpose of the mask was just to keep the floaty bits...

    Dive Buddies: Daughter or Son

From the point of view of the father: I remember offering my son help and guidance when he was first learning. Soon he was more comfortable and confident than I. He has his own life and isn't inclined to spend it diving with Dad much anymore but I don't think either of us have a problem...

    Rookie needing diving gear advice

Bear in mind that those prices quoted are per diver. While some may eventually choose to dive alone, new divers are well advised to dive in buddy pairs. That is particularly important in an "overhead" environment where you may run into entanglement hazards.

    Would a torch help?

I have found that a smallish flashlight (eg: C4 or D4) is better than a big light in turbid water, for the same reason that low beams are more useful than high beams on a foggy road. (er, wait. I guess that would be torch, dipped and brights, respectively? Three continents separated by a common...

Why not just get a standard fridge dolly from any hardware store and add a strap or two?

    New tank rust

Interesting idea. Autobody shops carry a few variations of "Rust Converter". The simplest is a mixture of phosphoric acid (that's the stuff in Coke that cleans rusty nails) acetic acid (the stuff that gives vinegar it's odour) and manganese carbonate. It reacts chemically with rust turning it...

CSI & diver in a tree

I have had the opportunity to witness more than one cylinder failure in a fire. And no, the burst disk doesn't always let go first. That's because the heat often causes the cylinder material to weaken long before the internal pressure is raised above the burst disk pressure. The first time I...

Out of Air at 84 ft

See, that's the beauty of it: You would do the same thing that you would do if any problem arose while breathing your buddy's octo: Switch to your redundant air supply, conveniently located on your back. Hey, I was just thinking aloud. I never said it was a good idea or even well thought...

    Which short steel tank??? help!

There seems to be some confusion caused by the word "volume". In one sense, "volume" of air can refer to the volume the contents would expand to if the pressure was reduced to 1 atm. Perhaps a better phrase for that would be "potential volume", because the air inside a full 80cu ft scuba...

Out of Air at 84 ft

Just ramblin' here: Since your buddy is your redundant air supply, maybe buddies should be treated like independant doubles. Both breath from one cylinder for 1/3, then swap octopuses (octopii?) and breath from the other fellow's cylinder for 2/3, before swapping back again for a second 3rd...

    Which short steel tank??? help!

An HP80 and an LP80 contain the same quantity (mass) of air. But the HP80 is smaller in volume. If my high school physics teacher was right, squeezing the same mass into a smaller volume increases the density. So when full, the air inside an HP cylinder should be more dense. But when empty, the...

Diver, 80, Survives 18 Hours in Ocean

10/09/04 accident at Monastery Beach (Carmel) aka ...

That sounds like a good way to drown the patient. Of course, technically they're already dead... It is possible to do compressions in-water by placing one hand underneath and one hand in the traditional landmark, but you won't last long before your arms are limp. Better would be to slip a...
