ID Required onboard vessels in US waters?

Ummm, Was that a shot? Assuming it was in reference to Newt Gingrich's recent blatherings, I should like to point out that exactly none of the 9/11 hijackers entered the US through Canada. The marijuana and prescription drugs are of course our fault, but I should further like to point out...

Comments on this reg would be appreciated!

I too have the Blizzard. They don't need any special accessories for use in cold, turbid Ontario water and are quite rugged. They have a reputation for being a little hard breathing at depth, but I've no complaints within recreational limits.

    all octos should side exhaust

I personally have a left-hand octo -- the hose tends to orient it in the correct direction for someone facing me. However, as Mike pointed out, who cares? Don't they teach how to breath from an upside down reg any more? I thought that was one of the more basic skills.

    Compressor air quality

In the interests of accuracy, Z180 applies to things like mining and asbestos removal. It expressly (in the standard and in the regulations) does not apply to diving air. There is no requirement or standard (in Ontario) for recreational diving air. There is a standard for commercial diving...

    Well stocked dive shop

Scuba Shack in Gravenhurst is reasonably well stocked. Better than some I've seen -- but then I've never been in Dive Tech so I can't compare. (Their web site sucks though. Still stuck in 2003)

Spring is here. Who's going diving?

The ice is going out today here in northern Muskoka. (For anyone who hasn't seen that happen, large patches are still kind of a giant slushy at the moment, surface temps around the freezing point.) There's enough open water that I was able to get a boat in the water and do a short cruise...

    Air warmer for cold diving

Would an air filled sleeve be any more bouyant than a dual-hose rig? I think exhaling through a water filled hose would take some effort, especially if the hose sagged below you a few inches. What about leaving it as a co-axial dual hose, perhaps with some sort of heat conductive fins on the...

    Need Air Fills

Deleted. Thought the better of it. Not fair to hijack this guy's thread further.

    Blown O rings?

Ummm, no, you have that right. I didn't phrase it quite right, did I? I guess I was trying to say you rotate the yoke counterclockwise against the valve as you tighten the clamp behind it. Anyway, you got the idea. As for yokes I think the idea is that if they start to stretch, the o-ring will...

    Need Air Fills

Maybe because Pufferfish was clamouring for the wrong standard? (BTW: did anyone ever happen across a copy of CSA Z275.2?) Ignore us Jak, the reference is to an old but bitter battle. Hope you find something close. If it makes you feel any better, I'm in the same boat. Closest shop is...

    Blown O rings?

I understood the principle advantage of DIN over yoke is that a yoke is far more susceptible to loosening up under pressure and that's what blows o-rings during a dive. There's two factors involved: first, a yoke can stretch slightly -- more so as cylinder pressure increases. More importantly...

    Stories behind usernames...

Years ago my brother and I worked with a fellow who could never remember my name. My brother used to mess with his head by calling me all sorts of different names -- Derwood, Dagwood, Darwood, Dilbert... A new one every time. Since my brother was my diving instructor, this is my way of saying...

    Getting gear into Canada

http://www.canlii.org/ca/sta/c-46/ Some relevant excerpts: "weapon" means any thing used, designed to be used or intended for use (a) in causing death or injury to any person, or (b) for the purpose of threatening or intimidating any person and, without restricting the generality...

    Diving on anti-depressants

Some are. In fact, in some people some anti-depressants can cause serious side effects like psychotic episodes or thoughts of suicide. Notice how many times I had to qualify that comment? Reactions to these drugs are very individual and nobody should apply a generalization to everybody...

    Mad Squirrel story (Coke alert!)

I've seen it in several variations. The make of motorcycle is the biggest variable -- everyone who passes it on changes the make to their own preference. It's a fun story. As for beleivability: Ever seen a cruiser hold a wheelie like that?

My mother's reasoning exactly  Thanks for the info.

WHY Dive shops make you Feel GUILTY ???

Interesting. I look at it from the point of view that stocking an item ties up a retailer's capital with no guarantee that it will sell and I should pay a premium for the convenience of walking in and walking out with the item. But ordering in? That's a guaranteed sale with no risk and no...

    April Fools Day Pranks?

One of the guys in my crew had arrainged for a sub to work for him yesterday. A few weeks ago he had a different guy subbing who failed to show up, so when I phoned him about 08h00 (AWOL is 07h30) to ask if he was coming in, he swallowed it hook, line and sinker. He assured me he had reminded...

    Should I buy tanks???

Just out of curiosity, what makes you think your son hasn't already tried diving in the pool? I know I probably would have at that age. (I have no idea how I survived the years between 6 and 16).
