Think your weekend of diving sucks / Read this!

The flow within the pipe can be described by the Hazen-Williams formula, fl = 0.2083 (100/C)^1.852 Q^1.852/di^4.8655 Where: fl = friction head loss in feet of water per 100 foot of pipe C = Hazen-Williams roughness constant Q = volume flow (USgal/min) di = inside diameter (inches)...

    Paintstripping/refinishing tanks

I have a (Sherwood branded) PST steel tank with a factory applied paint. I touched up the paint where they stamped it after the hydro (my theory being that the galv coating took a beating there). The LDS said that technically, it could not pass a visual inspection if painted because the paint...

    AED or not?

Nothing is firefighter proof. I wonder how the populace at O'Hare, et al compares to the crowd in a dive club. Specifically, what are the respective expected percentages of detecting a shockable rythm by the time the pads are applied? In an airport when someone suddenly has chest pains and...

Do more divers wear size 12 shoes??

Do you still need fins if you wear size 12 or (ack!) larger?

    Buoyance and Wetsuit

I've seen this and similar advice before*. Is there any reason you can't do it with a full cylinder and add the weight of the air? Eg, if the difference between a full cylinder and 500 psi is 5lbs, and if you find you need, say, 10 lbs weight when it is full, can you not leap to the conclusion...

a SCUBA diver was almost killed at a local marina in St.Margaret's Bay

That's not quite accurate in Ontario. At the moment, no training at all is actually required, although the operation must conform to all the safety requirements (safety diver + supervisor, O2 and first aid on scene, means of surface communication, tether line, etc. etc.) I did hear some talk...

(03 JUL 05) Diver Injured After Being Pulled Through Pipe

Actually, assuming the figures given in the report are accurate (6 feet per second flow rate, 96 inch diameter pipe 2500 feet long) and further assuming that the pipe is fairly straight but the pipe walls are relatively rough then the surface of the pond is only 2' 7 1/8" lower than the surface...

You know you're a COLDWATER diver when....

When you run into a neighbour in town and he says "Did you see that idiot out in the lake yesterday?" (Followed by a priceless look on his face as comprehension suddenly set in...)

(3/21/05) Cruise ship damages reef and almost runs down dive party

No, I for one do not agree. I think your logic is akin to saying a woman bears some responsibility for her own rape because she was out alone at night.

A 'solo' hello, from a newbie to this forum

Wonder why it has to be hoseless? Or do they just consider an AI computer to be a type of SPG?

Think your weekend of diving sucks / Read this!

Ooops. Sorry, I mixed it up with the numbers for the Board of Public Works treatment plant. Still, 1,700 feet is a pretty good distance from shore. Oh and the revised flow rate would be 113,097 USGPM -- one heck of a wet vac!

Think your weekend of diving sucks / Read this!

Ummm, yeah, riiiiiight... The diver is at fault because she should have stayed away from the unmarked, unprotected hazard hiding 4,500 feet from shore and sucking a current of 6 feet per second through a 42" pipe. That works out to 21,647 US gallons per minute. Pretty good vacuum I bet. She...

Sherwood Blizzard - Last minute questions

The Brut may well be the source of most Sherwood criticism. The Blizzard is a different animal (first and second stages) and I think it breathes better and more consistently than the Brut. Never had a problem in cold water. Never tried it in truly warm water.

"My introduction to the SMB", or "Viagra, anyone?"

Yes, it is designed to be inflated at depth -- it was the only one in the LDS (besides a standard lift bag) that was so designed. The only inflation point is the inverted "funnel" on the bottom. Playing with it ashore, I have discovered my primary reg mouthpiece is a bit shorter and a better fit...

"My introduction to the SMB", or "Viagra, anyone?"

After reading so much about the value of an SMB here I decided to add one to my kit. I bought the only one at the LDS. Yellow with "Diver Below" in bold red print, 5', made by Trident of the same vinyl stuff used for kid's swim toys I think. It has a small weight to supposedly keep it upright on...

    How's your SAC?

Interesting assumption. It was a part of the basic OW program of the old NASDS. We were taught to include our SAC as an integral part of dive planning process.

Max number of tanks in car?

And I've had cops let me slide on a speeding ticket. Besides, border guards aren't there to enforce TDG regulations, they are there to control entry of people.

Max number of tanks in car?

Canada you say? Under the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, air compressed to more than 40 psi is considered "Dangerous Goods". As a private individual, you have an exemption from the placarding requirements for moving tanks to or from home, place of purchase, and place of use. It is...
