    Rescue Breathing on the surface

I am a small cog in the study that supports his statements. That multi-year, multi-phase North American wide study is part of what led to the change in CPR standards to 30:2. There are always exceptions of course, but there is very strong statistical evidence that compressions are, above all...

    over weighting death

I wasn't there and I'm just a FF, not a medic, but: Assuming that the procedure down there is somewhat similar to the way it works up here, such a scenario would only occur after an advanced paramedic has run the full gamut of his resuscitation protocol (prolonged asystole with no response to...

Ahhh. So your short answer is: Cheat. :rofl3: I can respect that ;)

    First solo dives

Ok, I dive in colder water so I have a thick FJ wet suit and more weights. But. How the heck do you get back into a kayak even in minimal dive gear? Especially solo! I have enough fun getting in a runabout by myself never mind attempting a kayak! <lol>

Steel tank condemned for "neck crack" on VIP

The original post was lost in the great Scubaboard crash of 2007, but I told the tale of the LDS conducting a VIP on my steel tank and "condemning" it on the basis of what they called a "crack" below the threads (picture at http://www.lwra.net/temp/images/crack_2.JPG) Following the advice I...

    Hunting with bottles?

In Ontario: "sport fishing" means the taking of fish for non-commercial purposes by angling or by means of hook and line, spear, dip net, bait-fish trap, seine net or bow and arrow; O. Reg. 351/04, s. 1. So there is no legal difference between fishing with a hook or fishing with a spear...

Rocket Ascents... Can divers breach like a fish (split from Accident in Mich)

Too bad we have all these physicists but no rocket scientists. So many have come so close to the real answer and yet allowed it to slither through their fingers. As the diver ascends with the stuck inflator air in the BC is expanding. Where do you think all this air (stuck inflator button +...

    The Big Secret...

Yes there is. It may not apply to your jurisdiction, but several places have such laws in place. For example, to dive in Quebec, you need a provincial permit. What class of permit you can get depends upon your agency training. Here is a typical schedule: SCHEDULE 8 (s. 10) CLASS A DIVER...

Maximum depth for Open Water diver

I was kind of wondering about that myself. With NASDS the OW limit is 100'. How do these charter operations that are refusing PADI OW divers look at other agencies? Do they apply the PADI 60' rule to everyone?

    Diver accident in Michigan

‘Chance favours the prepared mind.’ — Louis Pasteur Which is another way of saying 400+ dives worth of experience and training took over when you had no time to stop and figure things out for yourself. In hindsight, you have identified what went right along with a few items that you could...

Diver dies on Hamilton horror movie shoot

Professional diver does not equate to commercial diver. A DM or instructor is a professional. An underwater welder is a commercial diver. Neither one is necessarily qualified to do the other's job. BTW: He was a recruit firefighter with the City of Toronto. That means he was in pretty decent...

    This is criminal...

While Ontario's efforts in this arena are to be applauded, unfortunately we only have 4 diving inspectors in Ontario. We also have 250,000 lakes alone. While I have never had occasion to report an obviously unsafe commercial diving operation, I have reported an unsafe construction site. This...

    What is an octopus?

I was similarly confused when I first heard other divers referring to the back-up second stage as the "octopus". When I was originally trained (NASDS), that was referred to as the "safe second" and the whole conglomeration was the "octopus". I have no idea why or when the change occured.

    bikes and diving

I have an FJR. 1/2 my weights go in the bottom of each pannier. 7mm FJ Wetsuit in the Givi E-45 trunk with the fins. All the rest of the gear tucked neatly into the panniers and the cylinder (steel 95) goes across the passenger seat strapped to the passenger handles with ratchet straps. Set the...

    Descending Vertically Vs Horizontally

I have found that to be true of the wetsuit too. Sometimes it takes a while for all the little bubbles to work their way out.
