    Are PADI Specialties worth it?!?!

AOW will get you on most boats. They may require you dive with a guide (Divemaster) if your experience isn't what they like to see. Usually that's a single dive to make them comfortable with you and then you're free to dive without professional supervision.

    Are PADI Specialties worth it?!?!

It's all about the instructor but for the most part specialities are exactly what you think. Finish your AOW and look into Rescue.

Let's talk cold water gloves. What are your recommendations.

Yep. I do just that. But I have the neoprene gloves with Kevlar. Great gloves but I can't do crap with them till they compress in water.

Let's talk cold water gloves. What are your recommendations.

I dive a CLX450 and have a large cranium as well. I have ZipSeals and can get my head thru it. I'm guessing your noggin isn't any bigger than mine. You can get removable dryglove rings that can be transferred to your new drysuit. If you are serious about a DUI be sure to get a dry glove ring...

Let's talk cold water gloves. What are your recommendations.

Dry gloves typically have a ring system that locks around your latex seals. You then lock the glove on the ring. Once you get used to dry gloves you'll never go back. You also wear a thin gloves under the dry glove as insulation. Ill be wearing dry gloves at Haigh on the 17th, as well as a few...

Recreational OW diving with long hoses (or the 'usual' r/h hose routing) ...

No one has said that a standard rec setup is bad. The OP stated in his first post that the long hose has more risk in the open environment which is just not true. He then went on to express uninformed situations which have been explained. I've moved to long hose config on both single and...

Recreational OW diving with long hoses (or the 'usual' r/h hose routing) ...

Most definitely not. The primary purpose of the long hose is to position divers sharing air in a variety of positions when needed. Like placing an out of air diver in front of you for exiting restrictions. It in no way suggests you should just let the person swim about within 7' of you. Have...

Recreational OW diving with long hoses (or the 'usual' r/h hose routing) ...

Which is why the donating diver controls and communicates as the ascent occurs. You are right that a panicked diver won't normally go for the buddy, but the surface. I've ridden a panicked diver to the surface. Scary stuff. I used my face to keep her mask and reg in her mouth. One hand to 'hug'...

Recreational OW diving with long hoses (or the 'usual' r/h hose routing) ...

First - a panicked diver won't be getting my reg. it just puts yourself in harms way. I donated to a recreational diver low on air last weekend. We identified his gas was low, made the switch before he got nervous and I placed him securely in my left side with a hand on his arm at all times. We...

    Censorship

It needs to be said that Scubaboard is a for profit business and will act in a manner that promotes its ability to make revenue. That said, from what I have seen of the board it's one of the less censored types. I was booted off of another board (not dive related) for mentioning a product that...

    BP&W vs jacket BC, AGAIN!

I'm tall as well and hated jacket BCs. They all would strap above my belly button and I felt like baby Huey. Started with a Cressi jacket. Now have a DSS large plate and two DSS wings (one for singles, one for doubles). Also have an Oxycheq aluminum plate for balancing my rig with doubles.

    Is the paper logbook necessary?

What's better is after IDC, to get the credited to teach specialties all you do is sign a form saying you have done a minimum number of dives around the speciality and pay a fee. For instance, drysuit is 20 dives and the fee (PADI). Make you feel safer knowing the guy giving your drysuit class...

    Is the paper logbook necessary?

I'm not saying people ask. I'm saying that 100 signed dives NO ONE keeps. I'm thinking there are forging parties happening at the start up of IDC :)

    Is the paper logbook necessary?

I don't buy that 95% of the IDC candidates have logs with signatures. Of the instructors I know that recently completed IDC and dives I did before they took the course, they never asked for my signature. It's a BS pre req. Period.
