I also did everything over two weekends. Classes on a Saturday and Sunday then open water dives 3 weeks later. I was so tired afterwards I almost didn't drive home from Monterey.
I hope to get a couple of fun dives in before the end of the year, then it's off to Belize for two weeks the day...
Thanks! We saw lots of jelly fish in chilly Monterey Bay this past weekend which was exciting once the surprise wore off. They were all over the place. The water was about 50 F (according to my DC).
I so plan on acquiring much of my own gear but I want to see how much diving I'm doing before...
I am now certified! I did my open water dives off San Carlos Beach in Monterey, CA. and I was a bit concerned about the cold water but I was wearing so much neoprene I looked like the stay puft marshmallow man, and I barely felt the cold after a few minutes.
The first dive on the first day was...
My local dive shop was talking up the wonders of Monterey Bay so much that I've decided to go ahead and do my open water certification dives before I get to ReefCI, so I'll be fully certified and will be able to jump right in, as it were. But I am going there for two weeks starting the last week...
Yeah, I would have preferred spreading it out over a bit more time but I had to balance taking these classes with my personal training and I could not get the days off training I needed so... it's all weekend. :)
But it should be a fun new experience, then it is off to do my OW dives in...
I don't feel like the LDS personnel pushed me into buying the suit. I asked some questions here, got some opinions and advice then took what I had learned here and asked more questions at the LDS which they answered. At no time did I ever get told "this is what you should do." So I feel like I...
I picked up a 3mm full wetsuit yesterday after the orientation class. I was talking to the guys at the dive shop again and they made me kind of nervous about using rented wetsuits after all their jokes about "two kinds of divers."
I know this suit will be appropriate for warm tropical waters...
Thanks for the advice everyone. It is pretty much the same I got from the folks at the dive shop. I guess I should have mentioned that since my desire, for the immediate future, is to dive in tropical waters I'll be getting a full 3mm suit (based on advice I got on this board).
I had not...
Hello, everyone. I'm staring to gear up for my pool classes, which I'm taking next month. I've got the student kit, and have purchased fins, mask, snorkel and boots.
I am going to buy my own wetsuit but wanted to know what everyone thought about me having it already for the pool classes. The...
So I finalized my plans yesterday to spend two weeks with Reef Conservation International during the end of the year. Now that I've committed to the trip I'm getting excited about it.
Regards,
Michael
Thanks, Harry. I had originally wanted to get contacts to save the cost of the mask. Regrettably, when I tried to use them at home I couldn't ever get the stupid things in my eye without it taking a hour per eye. So, I had to give up on that idea.

Michael
After reading all the helpful information on this board and in links that have been provided in this thread I've decided to go with a 3mm full wetsuit and 5mm booties for now since all of my planned diving is going to be in tropical waters for the near future. The link Spectrum included was very...
Thanks for the feedback and links everyone. I think now I will be able to ask some intelligent questions at the dive shop when I go to get certified and eventually buy gear.
Regards,
Michael
Getting a jump on the research is exactly why I posted here, Pete. I really appreciate your feedback and thanks for the link to the mask company. I'll be looking into them as well as what ever the dive shop recommends. It's good to have options.
I was leaning towards getting the full suit...
Hello, everyone.
After I get back from an extended business trip in Europe I'm going to get my scuba cert, then later this year I have a two week trip to ReefCI in Belize planned to really immerse myself and gain some experience.
I've been recommended to bring a 3mm wetsuit and a couple...
Thanks, TSandM. I lurked around on 3 or 4 scuba-related boards for a bit before deciding to sign on with ScubaBoards. The folks here look like they really know they are talking about and safety is a very high priority.
Regards,
Michael
Hello, everyone.
I've decided that this year I am finally going to get scuba certified, which is something I've kind of, sort of been thinking about doing for many years. Last year I finally went to Rwanda and tracked the mountain gorillas after wanting to do that for many years, so I'm...
