Group Trip - Tres Pelicanos/Casa Mexicana

I started diving Coz in 2004. My last diving pre-Wilma was in April of 2005 and my first dive post Wilma was January of 2006. As a long time dive pro said to me, "Whatever damage divers do to reefs, it is nothing compared to what a hurricane does." Anyhow, I came back every year, sometimes...

First Coz trip - need help planning

No, it's not a perfect solution as the op is still in a car on the way to the marina, but it minimizes the trip length and addresses their mention of TP as a possible dive op.

First Coz trip - need help planning

Everything and anything is an option. You may find it no inconvenience to taxi to shore dive, but others might, and a solution that now has the op taking taxis to shore dive when the op said they didn't want ground travel to dive, for whatever reason, doesn't sound like a great fit. Well...

First Coz trip - need help planning

Whatever the reason, the poster said they wanted to avoid it. There are solutions that fit that requirement. It's a guess, but I suspect the poster read about TP, knew about their transport procedures and was hopeful for a suggestion that allowed diving with TP without land transport *and*...

First Coz trip - need help planning

Yeah, I've seen the posts. I'm sure it's a great dive op and I've stayed at Casa Mexicana. I have no problems with it, or that combination. My post is in regard the original poster's request. The poster wanted a hotel with shore diving and didn't want to go to the marina via land transport...

First Coz trip - need help planning

Reading this, if you can get a room at the Barracuda, that's probably going to work nicely for you. You'll be right there in the action, so to speak. The many restaurants downtown will be your oyster. Unless you've found out differently, Aldora will pick you up off the dock. You can shore...

First Coz trip - need help planning

Knowing that the Barracuda has easy shore diving makes for a good option if you want to save some money ($80 night?), and be so close to all those downtown restaurants. On a short trip, one could stay at CDM and eat around there and it wouldn't be the end of the world. I'm not even going and I...

First Coz trip - need help planning

This is a good start. Don't be shy on the boat about asking if others might want to do a twilight, night or twilight/night. You probably know this already but Aldora uses high pressure 120cf steel tanks. You'll get longer dives, and they take a longer SI. I don't know when you'll get back...

First Coz trip - need help planning

With DP, my understanding is that you'll be on a big boat and have a harder time doing 4 tanks per day. You can upgrade to smaller, faster boats, but I haven't read great things. DP is a very large op, maybe the largest on the island? I haven't been diving with any of those ops, but DP would...

First Coz trip - need help planning

If you can skip the shore diving and can get on with Blue XT Sea on those dates, this is a good plan. If you're mostly wanting a shore location to "get wet" before the boat dives, talk to Blue XT Sea or whichever shops you contact and discuss this. Any of them should be good help. If you are...

First Coz trip - need help planning

If you decide to stay at CDM, I highly recommend a balcony room if you're diving. You'll want that for drying swimsuits and neoprene. It used to be that if you booked through Delta, you'd get breakfast included. Other booking avenues have included free tickets for the Atlantis Submarine which...

First Coz trip - need help planning

It's one thing to cheerlead your hotel and dive op when someone posts, "Gee, I've never been diving in Cozumel and I'm trying to figure out who to dive with and where to stay." It's entirely another thing when an OP lays out some guidelines that don't fit your chosen favorites. Unless the OP...

First Coz trip - need help planning

Dandy Don, while you're here, which is less expensive, Mary Carmen or the Colonial? I poked my head into the MC once and inquired about rates and was surprised that the rate was so high for what I saw. I can't begin to remember what the rate was at that time. This was probably 4 years ago...

First Coz trip - need help planning

The Barracuda and diving with Aldora would fit your bill, but I'm not sure about the shore diving there. I have a friend that's done it some time ago. Aldora might pick you up there, but you might have to walk a block or two to their dock downtown. You wouldn't get in a car to get to the boat...

Trip Report Tres Pelicanos/Casa Mexican Trip Report Sept. 2018

I wasn't in Coz at that time, but it's a pretty common strategy. When I first started diving nitrox, the shop explained it when I asked for nitrox for both tanks of a trip. If you're on one of the "walls", and there's a down current, it's a comfort to not worry about the MOD. Even with the...

Trip Report Tres Pelicanos/Casa Mexican Trip Report Sept. 2018

Great trip report! I've been hoping you'd get to Cozumel! 26 tanks on an 8 day trip is great and a heck of a pace. Good on 3Ps for their part in making that happen. I dive a Suunto Mosquito computer. It's very conservative. My air consumption isn't horrible but I don't dive Nitrox to...

    Shore snorkeling recomendations

If you're at the southern cruise ship pier another option, which is walkable, would be Tikila Bar. It's about 4-5 blocks north of the southern pier. I don't know what's going on there Christmas day, but the cruise ships used to bring snorkel excursions there and they may still do so.

    Cozumel shore diving?

For the record, you can shore dive many places north of the southern cruise ship pier to probably the Barracuda hotel, which is on the south side of the square. The Presidente is just inside the marine park as I understand. North of the cruise ship pier and not in the marine park you can get...

    Landmark Resort of Cozumel residences?

Others with better information will be able to be more specific and may correct my understanding but fwiw, $75 a night sounds really great. You're basically at the Money Bar, so south of the marina, which means any op should be able to pick you up there, and you're on the north end of the...

Man fired from diving job after seen holding protected species

As I'm sure you have, I've seen a lot of impressive things out of your friend the DM. One was 3 big, fat, juicy lionfish at Maracaibo that lived to see another day because the current was a little switchy and there were some other considerations. There was a 99.999999% chance that he could...
