Cave diving on CC is safer than on OC?

Whenever I dive with a lot of reb divers at the same time I see something happen at the shallow stop. These groups are sometimes in the 10+ divers at the time. One person will do a o2 flush, which will cause a cascade of divers finally checking their po2 and do a o2 flush too. 15 divers with the...

Cave diving on CC is safer than on OC?

How many people do you see doing risky dives on OC? And how many people with less than 5 years of experience do you see doing 200m dives or 3km penetrations? OC is simple, the rules are simple, the execution is simple. CC is not, but it does make previously risky dives look benign because you...

The Wisdom? of Split Dives Discussion

Not everyone has money to hire a private boat, and not every boat has enough customers to justify doing just a tec dive. And plenty of tec rebreather dives are done in the middle of nowhere, in a cave, out of cell service with the only surface support coming from a spouse 100 km away who knows...

The Wisdom? of Split Dives Discussion

I'm not arguing that, of course having immediate access to aid is better than not having it, but there are pleanty of less than ideal, risky situations we put ourselves in daily. Including diving. I hate split drops, I hate it when I'm in the water with no support, and I hate it when I'm in the...

The Wisdom? of Split Dives Discussion

Whenever I see a "Split drop" being done I see the first group of divers hurrying not to inconvenience the others or even worse being hurried by the others. Still do it all the time, even though the risks vs reward is not even close.

Pompano Beach Fatality Sunday April 16th

Plenty of people took a breath of hypoxic dill and died before their body hit the bottom, cutting the o2 is not the only way of passing out.

Pompano Beach Fatality Sunday April 16th

Mistakes and equipment failures happen to everyone no matter the skill level and pretending some people are to good to fail does a disservice to everyone else. I hope we get some details so we can know if this was preventable.

If you were to redo the scuba industry how would you do it?

If we do consider the perceived lack of new divers (hint, there has never been more new divers than now by any agency metric) how would making training harder and less available help that?

If you were to redo the scuba industry how would you do it?

Instructors and certifications are not the crux of the scuba industry, I really don't understand why people consider them so important. Destination dive sites are where the money is, they create the most jobs and create a huge demand, local instructors in the US are not even on the map of the...

If you were to redo the scuba industry how would you do it?

Should we rework the whole industry? Scuba industry works just fine in the rest of the world, sure there is a couple of questionable aspects but would overengineering solutions for them help?

    Is there an instructor crisis?

I'm all for the free market. Apparently in this case the consumers have decided that the product is worth less than the overhead costs. I'm also all for free speech, that's why I'm calling speciality dives a bad business practice.

    Is there an instructor crisis?

You beat me to it. I'll hapilly admit that I have many times said that speciality dives are rip-offs and instructors (and agencies, realistically they are the problem) offering incremental training with little benefit are money grabbing.

    Is there an instructor crisis?

Most people would feel happy that future generations are leading a easier life then their predecesors. Perhaps a bit of therapy would help?

Wonder where the 10k instructors that were made each year for the past 30 years went.

Tec diver dies in air deep dive challenge

People in these incidents were taught by people who use 1990s curriculum. There are instructor trainers with thousands of dives and hundreds of students who do not understand or care about variable sac rates, gas density, decompression models. They have been pushed out of destinations like...

How long can stages be left underwater?

Gear recovered with bodies of divers was found to be operable even after years of saltwater exposure.

What went wrong on your dive today/recently? And what did you learn?

Well, I dry docked my boat, travelled 5 hours with 50 kg of gear for a dive and the dive was postponed. I learned to never trust engineers when they tell you something is urgent. I solemnly swear from now on I will always be the one late to a dive.

    Depth Ratings for CCr's

I don't think anything recreational is rated for deeper than 100m for the same reason that no recreational certification goes deeper than 100m. It's not worth the liability and testing costs. As far as I know megs, jj, treb, xccr, sentinel, ourobors, inspiration and probably a bunch more have...
