    Deco hand signal?

I don't remember learning any of those signals. My buddies and I simply point at our computer, followed by the appropriate hand signal based on what needs to happen next -- e.g. level off, ascend or wobbly hand. At a safety stop, or other deco-required ceiling, we'll communicate remaining...

Taking an open water student below 60 ft?

I was limited to 40 feet on my PADI open water dives back in 2008. Did the rules change since then, or was my instructor being conservative for other reasons?

    Primary or alternate donate poll

If I have a choice, I will donate my alternate because I always dive with a pony bottle. But I think it's more a question of "which regulator will your buddy grab when he's out of air" ? You should be ready to have your primary yanked out of your mouth at any time.

    Horrible Divers Everywhere?

Personally, I found buoyancy difficult to master, and this with focused effort and good instruction. I think I was 100 dives in before I consistently never yo-yo'd. I'm grateful for all the instructors, dive masters and buddies who stuck with me through the all the silting and corking until I...

POLL: How many dives per year do you consider a minimum necessary for skills not to degrade?

I would rephrase the question to "How often should you practice a skill to be sure you can still do it?" The answer will vary based on the person and the activity in question. I try to work through all my skills at least once a quarter. Anything that was a struggle gets extra practice for a...

First time diving in Seattle area

There's decent shore diving in the city proper, and a half day road trip to some really great sites. Evergreen Dive Service in Everett, or Underwater Sports (many locations) can hook you up with a divemaster that would be happy to show you around, or maybe set you up with a boat dive if one is...

    Logging Shallow Dives? ex. Rivers

Caveat: I am not an instructor. My guess is it varies from teacher to teacher, region to region. The more important question is whether you have sufficient experience for the type of dives you plan to do solo. So I would consider your experience to count towards shallow solo dives in familiar...

Looking for good summer dive sites in Utah

Hello. I'm doing a road trip to Utah this summer and hoping to get some diving in along the way. I'm most likely diving solo on this trip, so the dives need to be uncomplicated, with max 60ft depth. Skill-wise, I'm used to diving Puget Sound, with somewhere around 600 dives, at 2-3 dives per...

Adding 2x Sola 1200 to GoPro; useful or waste of money?

I shoot a lot of macro in the murky waters of Puget Sound with a Hero 6 and one or two Sola 2000's, using default camera settings. I tend to get best results with the lights on the middle setting, and the lights two to three feet away from the subject. So from my extremely amateurish vantage...

Question about air integrated computers and transmitters

+1 vote on redundant SPG. Since I went AI about 300 dives ago I've needed it three times. Once I forgot to pair pre-dive, and twice I've had my transmitter fail. It was nice not to have to call the dive.

what do YOU do with your car keys?

I had my dealership cut a "valet key" which I take with me into the water. Chipped key is locked in my car.
