Who travels with a spare mask and why?

I never used to but after having some ear problems last June, which ruined a trip to Lanzarote, I bought an IST Pro-ear mask. I'm so glad I did because I had issues again in August on a trip to North Sulawesi and that mask, as well as some local ear drops, allowed me to continue to dive (and N...

Tell me about your Snorkel (POLL)

I had a very similar experience in Thailand, but thankfully I did have my snorkel in my bag. A whale shark circled our boat during an SI, so I ran to grab my snorkel and a few of us jumped in for an unforgettable few moments with that beautiful creature. I don’t wear it on a dive, but will...

Tell me about your Snorkel (POLL)

I take my snorkel on every trip...and use it for snorkelling. I haven't taken a snorkel on a dive since my AOW course. I never liked wearing a snorkel and it felt like I got rid of a real PITA when I stopped wearing one. Having said that, I would consider taking one on some dives if there was...

    Bali March 8-17. Tips?

We visited Bali in May 2017. In Tulamben we stayed with Liberty Dive Resort. Nice rooms (we had a fantastic view of Mt Agung from our bed) and three pools to choose from. Food was ok although nothing to write home about, but lets face it we were there for the diving. You get your own local...

    BBC Newsbeat

Sir David Attenborough is a national treasure this side of the pond, and he's done so much to raise awareness of environmental destruction on land and in the oceans. BBC's Blue Planet 2 is a must-watch if you can access it!?

    Wetsuit question

Wetsuits should be tight-fitting and can be a little tricky to get on but if it's a fight then I'd say the chances are it's too small. How does it feel once on? If it feels tight over the shoulders for example and you struggle to squat down or touch your toes then that would also indicate it's...

Vacation divers - when did you decide to buy your own gear?

I first bought my own mask after having issues with rental masks during our 2nd dive trip when we did our AOW. It took a while to buy anything else because I didn't wanna carry a lot of gear on holiday, esp as we have young kids. It's not until I met someone in Thailand with all his own gear...

Watch this video of the Blue Hole of Dahab before it is deleted

Scary stuff!! I’m assuming the person filming is the instructor, Mr TO... I’m thinking the guy’s walked into the shop, slapped his ‘Trimix card’ on the table and requested to be filmed going to 100m in the Blue Hole. Mr TO said “show me the money” and bingo! Maybe he has mouths to feed...

Mark Powell’s book on technical diving is finally available

And a nice bloke too. He even had time for me on the morning of his daughter's wedding for my Nitrox practical!! If his interpersonal skills are anything to go on then the book should be thorough and clear. I’m not planning on going down the technical route but I’m tempted to buy the book for...

    DIN VS YOKE

+1 for DIN. DIN seems to becoming more widely available, including SE Asia. As others have said, it's worth picking up a DIN to yoke adaptor just in case. I've only had to use mine once, when they ran out of DIN tanks. Only issue I experienced was that the adaptor protrudes more and I bumped...

North Sulawesi Trip Report: Bangka Island and Lembeh, November 2018

Yes, we've only been once but the thought of what could happen at Bangka is horrific. My earlier comment about there being some real concerns I was a complete understatement! Anke from Blue Bay has been there from the beginning and is very upset. I really hope she stays! Im not sure about family...

    Scuba Diving In Thailand

That’s a terrible story, I’m glad you’re ok! This discussion about the full moon party reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend a while back who told me he went to the full moon party in 1989 when it was just around 200 people sitting around a fire and ghetto blaster, drinking beer and...

    Scuba Diving In Thailand

Aaw man, gutted! So obviously you went to the Orb gig! :D I saw them here in Brighton (England) years back, but my memory of it’s pretty hazy... I still love their earlier stuff the most, I spent many hours listening to them, esp UFOrb...a friend used to call me Orb (as an anagram of Rob)...

North Sulawesi Trip Report: Bangka Island and Lembeh, November 2018

That’s partly what worries me. I liked the rustic feel of Blue Bay and didn’t mind using the Mandi/ lack of running water, and no air-con which personally I don’t like anyway, although it did get a bit hot through the night with no fans when they turn the generators off. I think it helps to...

North Sulawesi Trip Report: Bangka Island and Lembeh, November 2018

We’ve also recently discovered Indo and there’s no looking back now! Our first trip last year took in Gili Air, Lombok, which was great for the family, & Tulamben & Candidasa, Bali, which were wonderful and really opened our eyes to Indo diving. This year we visited Bunaken & Bangka. My diving...

    Scuba Diving In Thailand

Agreed, AOW is worth doing as it adds to your knowledge and opens doors to a wider range of sites dive ops will take you to. You could do a wreck adventure dive which can count towards your AOW.
