    UK diving

Also, I'm not sure what type of diving you're used to, but be prepared for some poor viz. I've only done two local dives. The first was a drift dive out of Newhaven and we had around 1m viz (a bit of a shock to my system!). The next time was a wreck out of Shoreham near the new wind farm which...

Early May Racha Yai & Racha Noi or Phi Phi

From research I've done regarding diving in that area, which led me to believe that the Rachas have been affected by bleaching in recent years and that the diving is generally not that much to write home about, particularly compared to sites such as the Bidas. It's a long way to go so...

Early May Racha Yai & Racha Noi or Phi Phi

I believe the diving around Koh Phi Phi is likely to be better than the Rachas, although I've never dived the latter. I've certainly had some excellent dives around the Lanta & Phi Phi areas. Nothing particularly challenging either - all pretty much easy relaxed dives.

Talk me out of a apex black ice.

I got integrated weight pockets for my XDeep Ghost system. The backplate is very lightweight (the whole deluxe system weighs around 3kg) so with a 5mm wetsuit & 12L alu tank I needed 10kg (22lb) lead for the Red Sea - 8kg ditchable weight in the integrated weight pockets and 2kg in trim weight...

Talk me out of a apex black ice.

Why do you wish to be talked out of buying one? They do indeed look like a nice bit of kit, and would suit your purposes. I was tempted to get one myself when a saw a good deal last year (possibly a fair bit cheaper here than the US). I was put off by its weight for travel and it has much more...

Trip Report: Ocean View Tulamben with the family.

Padang Bai is also on our radar but NL and Amed seem to fit the bill more with young kids. Cheers, Rob

Trip Report: Ocean View Tulamben with the family.

Thanks for your report. It's nice to get some feedback for resorts in Tulamben other than LDR (even though it is great!) We're heading back to Bali in August but would like to see other parts of the island. This time we'll probably stay on Nusa Lembongan first, then head up to Amed for...

Diving in Bangka island, north Sulawesi

No experience with Coral Eye but we've stayed at Blue Bay and can thoroughly recommend it. The beach is lovely and it's in a protected bay, which is good as the wind/waves tend to get up in the afternoon in the summer. They also use the bay for check dives but it's a good little muck site in...

    Travel destination for beginner

I would also recommend the Egyptian Red Sea. We've dived out of Dahab in July 2012 and Coraya bay, Marsa Alam in April last year. There are some nice easy shore dives near both areas and along the coast. Boat trips also possible from both places. In Coraya Bay we stayed at SuneoClub and dived...

"Nervous" travellers and Phillipines and Indonesia

We’ve visited SE Asia (mainly Thailand but also Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore & Indonesia (Bali & N Sulawesi)) annually since 2006 (diving since 2011) and have never witnessed any major issues or felt threatened. The worst I’ve seen is a couple of punches thrown involving drunken tourists...

    Scubapro GO Sport

Has anyone made a comparison of the SP Go Sport fins with Apeks RK3? I was thinking of buying some for travel as they're about 1kg lighter per pair than the RK3s, but not sure if the the weight saving is worth buying them for. I rather deal with carrying more weight if my RK3s perform better...

    Koh Samui/Phangan/Tao in April 2020

It's a bigger island than Koh Tao with more topside activities, such as a waterfall and temples to visit. We only stayed a couple of nights many moons ago (not for the full moon party though) and hired scooters to see some of the island. We stayed on a beach on the southwest of the island which...

Yep I did it, middle ear Barotrauma first day of Raja Ampat liveaboard

I feel for you...so sorry to hear that (no pun intended). I did something similar on a trip to N Sulawesi last year and sat out several days before I felt my ear was ok enough to dive again. I wasn't on a liveaboard though so sucked less I guess! I hope you can at least do some snorkelling and...

    Koh Samui/Phangan/Tao in April 2020

Btw, we chose the option of staying overnight near the pier (Magic House was great MAGIC HOUSE - Updated 2019 Prices, Guesthouse Reviews, and Photos (Chumphon, Thailand) - TripAdvisor) and got the 7am ferry, which got us to the hotel on Koh Tao nice & early. The issue we had with that was we...

    Koh Samui/Phangan/Tao in April 2020

Also: the Lomprayah ferries leave at 7am & 1pm and take around 1.5 hours to Koh Tao. If you take the Lomprayah/Nok Air package, dont opt for the morning ferry from Koh Tao as you'll just have to wait for the coach to leave from the pier to the airport at 4pm, which is the same coach as you'd get...

    Koh Samui/Phangan/Tao in April 2020

Their website's working for me. Just from a quick search putting random dates in for Jan, I came up with a price of around US$140 (return) for the flight (including the extra 20kg baggage allowance option), bus transfer & ferry. Nok air are a budget no frills airline but we have used them...

    Koh Samui/Phangan/Tao in April 2020

Nok Air Home - NokAir do a combination deal where you can buy your flight from Bangkok (DM) to Chumphon, the transfer to the pier and the Lomprayah ferry in one package. We did this for Koh Tao in August. It's all very straightforward. You would need to allow for an overnight stay near the...

If I could buy only one piece of gear, what should I get?

MASK! Assuming you can rent everything else, and you're only going to buy one piece of equipment, then, like others, I'd make it a mask that's fits your face well. Next on the list would be a computer.
