    Cost of Artificial Reefs?

The cost of turning the HMCS Yukon (a 366 feet long, 40 feet wide, Canadian destroyer escort) into an artificial reef off the coast of San Diego came to about 1.2 million (June 2000) and while that may not seem very high, a portion of the prep work was carried out by volunteers. Not sure of how...

Recreational Pony Bottles, completely unnecessary? Why or why not?

I think the disconnect here is the assumption that the "back gas" will always be available while those supporting a pony take the position that no gas is available in your primary cylinder(s) so the contingency is to carry a pony. While the complete failure of the primary system may be extremely...

Recreational Pony Bottles, completely unnecessary? Why or why not?

Depends on how far down the “what if” rabbit hole you are willing to travel. Is a sudden and complete failure of your system possible…yes. Is it probable…no. If you are cruising at 100 mph and your car suddenly dies, you gradually slow and move off the road. If you are 100 feet under water and...

Recreational Pony Bottles, completely unnecessary? Why or why not?

I would say that any independent air source can mitigate the potential issues as long as the system is used properly and monitored. Doubles are easy as you simply switch regs and isolate the problem. If however you run your doubles down to empty by not paying attention, you still have the same...

Recreational Pony Bottles, completely unnecessary? Why or why not?

I look at a pony bottle on a regular dive as just a fail safe in case your main system has a sudden and complete failure. If you carry a pony in case you run your primary cylinder(s) dry then you should give up diving as you are unable to pay attention and dive safely as there is no excuse for...

    Halcyon Cinch screw removal

That’s the latest style that you hold with a crescent wrench. The older round style you just use a pair of pliers to hold it while you remove the bolt.

Southern California LDS -> 02 Clean or Just VIP

On a side note for Temecula, I went in that shop once and that was the last time. I stopped by several years ago after a working dive to get a few cylinders filled so I could have them the next day. While they filled the cylinders, they would not release them to me until I paid for a big Nitrox...

    Ice diving course?

    1. not always, several factors contribute to the contour of ice. Clarity of ice is another issue. Sometimes ice is so clear underneath that the bubbles spreading across the surface are the best indicator of where it is. Always look up when ascending and look for your bubbles or raise your arm...

    Ice diving course?

That white layer is just where the air is trapped in the top layer of the ice. The ice could be several inches or feet in thickness. Some folks push the block under the hole while others remove it. I don't see it in the pic so it's hard to tell how thick that ice is.

    Ice diving course?

Another option may be to contact your local dive recovery unit (Law Enforcement, Fire Department, or SAR team) and see if they can assist you in finding a good instructor in your area. We would help local divers at my old unit in Wyoming. Back when I had hair :) This ice dive occurred at...

What really is an "Advanced Open Water" diver?

JMHO, the last thing we need right now in a declining market population is more regulations. The standards have been set and it should be up to the individual agencies and instructors to emphasize what these certifications indicate and advise students how these certs should be viewed. People are...

How to correctly hold the regulator

JMHO, it doesn’t really matter what method you choose as a controlled simulation is going to be much easier than reality. If someone is in a true OOA situation, they are not going to swim over to you, get your attention, give you the OOA signal, and wait for you to present them with a regulator...

    Y valve vs H valve

I didn't have any available so I went out and took a quick pic. When this is all mounted up, I run the 7' primary hose and the BC inflator off the right post and I run the secondary regulator and SPG off the left.

    Y valve vs H valve

Yes, that is how I run mine. They do have them in imperial sizes; however, you can only find them used as they stopped making them some time ago. You hear rumors of them doing another run on these but so far that has never materialized. Every now and then someone pops up and sells some but they...
