Tip cup in a SHOE STORE!?!?????

I agree with those who say that the prices should reflect the real cost of running the business, including the cost of fairly paying the staff. If the shop just wants to attract customers in with "competitve" prices & expects us to subsidize wages with charity, are they really competitive? If...

    not feeling great....

Yes, I was thinking what Rickyd said! How about your hood? It is common for new divers to find the hood constricting on the throat. If this is the problem, I tell students to try the Henderson Hyperstretch hood. It will run ya around $40, & will ease the constriction around your neck. I'm...

    Freediving as training for diving?

I don't think that taking a breath from a tank on the bottom & exhaling after inhaling form the tank & while ascending is dangerous. Yes, you must pay attention to what you are doing, but freediving practice in the pool can help your manueverability & agility. It is great to practice surface...

    Whats in them thar burgers...???

Vegetarians never have to worry about "barf burgers" with manatee meat. So Hal, u r going 2 the Channel Islands? 3 days sounds great!!!! I have only been to Anacapa (2x) but I love it & hope to see more soon! Please tell us all about your trip when u get back.

    New divers

Colorado is lovely. Guess you will be learning the altitude tables, huh? Yeah, having your own equipment makes each dive about DIVING, not about adjusting to new stuff. It's safer & more fun. Go to the equipment section & post what type of diving u r doing & some of the old salts will give...

    My first pool session

I don't know any scuba instructors who can afford to loose all their parking meter money in the pool like that! Sounds like the private lesson idea has been a good choice for you. I love hearing how others are teaching mask clearing. For some reason, it trips up so many OW students! Keep...

    dive slate

Are they planning to have you just jot verbal messages, or to map reefs? The pencil types are the best if you must draw. In fact, I don't like the others at all because they are too impermanant. If I need to write down some compas headings but accidentally erase them on the etch-a-sketch...

    dive flag u use them

I shore dive more than anything, & my group does thusly: The flag is folded on its staff in the float which I swim out with to about 25' of water past the surf zone. At the site, I remove spool from the zippered float case, attach it by clip to the float, & unfurl the line to the...

Amber? Are we really crazy to dream of whales in sky-boxes? Or are the whales crazy to want the same treatment cops get whether or not they are Blue Whales?"

    Things to do in Walmart

IMHO, chains like Wal-mart are hurting american workers by leading the race to the bottom. Read Barbara Ehrenreich's book, Nickle And Dimed if you have no notion about the life of the Wal-mart employee. Check out the website for Sweatshop Watch if you have not idea about the lives of the...

    equipment

As long as something fits well, you can get it all used. Get it from a reputable place (LDS) and make sure they stand behind it. I have bought fins, snorkels, masks, reg, computer all used. Wetsuit is harder to fit used.

Pennies as wight as opposed to lead?

And if they don't work out, I have some broken crockery you can have. But seriously, I have a mentor who just stuffs rocks in his pockets & ditches them as he rises. Try the pennies. Tell us how they go. You may be onto something.

    Do people dive in Jan/Feb?

Neve, you can rent any piece of equipment you need. It is much easier than lugging stuff. For colder water you will need more stuff (gloves, hood, etc.) And the price varies. Would you consider Catalina's Casino Point off of Los Angeles? If it does not work with your itinerary, nevermind...

    All is looking good

How about tix to Aussie Disney theme park? Or take a clue from how sandwich shops keep the cops around & give them free drinks with every cheeseburger! It's all about incentives, & you can well bet that New Zealand is already promising TV endorsement deals thru shoe companies. One word...

..and I saw a really grimy homeless guy eating out of a grocery store salad bar with his dirty hands. But I was happy because it was where my evil boss got her lunch every day.:mean:
