    Anchored boat story 4

Great reading, UP! Too bad Skin Diver is defunct, or these stories would have been shoo-ins for the final page! I heard a funny but true one about a boat anchored with a rope securely tied to...a crate in the boat. When the divers found their anchor & strangely slack line, they realized that...

Did you ever change your regular dive buddy?

When I first started, my husband was my main buddy. We got into this to have a togetherness activity. As we dove, issues bubbled up between us that seemed diving-related but were deeper (ie: I would indicate that I was low on air & he would reacte as if I was being overly fussy & keep goofing...

    Californian Neptune Divers

It sounds good so far, but still hoping to hear more about what its function is. Really think we could use at least 2 CA clubs. In my view, There is the North & Central group, the LA group (Thru Long Beach), Orange County, and San Diego & south. We all dive as much territory as we can, but if...

outrage at instructor's intervening with local law

When the law is called upon to regulate something it does not understand, something foolish always happens. One silly thing we still have on the books in California is that a tank here must have a J valve! Someone wrote the law in the 70's & for some reason they thought that the J valve was...

Your local group: what meeting topics?

Because the main focus of my nifty club is diving on wrecks, topics of preservation and salvage are always interesting during the meetings. There is talk of law, as the person who discovers a wreck, the local governing bodies, & other parties often have to decide who the booty may belong to...

    The Flatfoots

What has been tough for me in working with kids is that you do not just have to teach diving skills but discipline. These are not poor kids, either, but often rich & spoiled brats who don't see why they should obey me anymore than the housekeeper at their dad's hotels. I have had to restrain...

    Neoprene Related Rash

Would a nice rash gard or skin under the suit help?

    Greetings From Berkeley, CA

I am a NAUI kid, too. I have not dove NoCal yet, but when I do, I will try to have a drysuit.

TUSA Platina Plus fins for women

I DID try them in the pool, & they were not bad. They actually made my Rocket Fins feel very heavy! I have mentioned color many times myself & I will go there again. There are practical reasons to have a nice, visible, matching kit. If you are on a boat & have all yellow stuff,, it is...

    Buying Used Gear?

I am not like other cookies! I used to have a custom suit. Then I got the Hyperstretch by Henderson. It molds to YOU. They are getting so popular that you see dozens on the beach any given day.

    First pool session

Sounds like you are off to a great start. I tired split fins for the first time yesterday & felt like I was cheating - the kicking was so mellow! I do not see a problem with modifying your inflator button with a loop. Glad you are having fun!

    OW last weekend...

Nobody wants to rain on your parade. It sounds like you did fine on that dive. I, too have dived on the exterior of a wreck in 40' of calm, warm water at night with a large group & did fine. However, there are newer divers (like my roommate) who jump to a lot of conclusions based on...

    New2Sport

...but that is what my husband did to me. And that is why we very rarely dive together! It happens more than you think.

    Staying Warm

For some folks who have never worn a hood, the squeeze on the neck is oppressive. Try the hyperstretch hood or a beanie (a little neoprene hat with a chin-strap.) Yes diving is colder than playing in the surf.

    Henderson Hyperstretch Suit

I got my Henderson Hyperstretch 1 year ago. I feel like an underwater ballerina in it! I got the 5mm & pair it with a Henderson Trilaminate fleece which cuts my buoyancy by about 3 pounds. (DIG IT!)

    Anchored boat story 3

OH GOD! I would LOVE to animate that! I was trying to think what underwater scenario would make a good cartoon, but it sounds like my imagination can't keep up with UP's real life! Also, I am thrilled you mentioned the giant octopus! We only get dinky ones down here...and as far as your #1...

    competent divers

Hey Arduous, I have had some experience with the kids in OW classes & feel the same way. I do not think that the profit-making potential of expanding the market justifies this trend. I prefer to teach younger kids snorkelling & skin diving which has skills applicable to...

    competent divers

Here's where the trouble starts; with the idea that not having good diving chops can be equated with stupidity. In my NAUI leadership book there is a concept about learning that goes beyond the mind to the muscles which also have a learning curve. There is also the difference between having...
