Safest locales for diving around the world?

    They seldom dive.

Serious waves off the US West Coast

I think Jay described it nicely. Weather related waves are at the surface - with the depth of the wave below an "average" surface being about equal to the wave crest. Tsunamis form when a huge amount of water is dispaced at depth due to tectonic forces or a massive submarine landslide. That...

No need to scan Craigslist - create a search agent there that will scan for you and send you an email every day if it finds anything.

    Multi Level Dive Logging?

Hey Todd - simple solution - print out new log forms, without that box! Problem solved..... :)

Buying a used ladyhawk scubapro BCD would appreciate any help! :)

Oly was able to identify the power inflator type by its appearance. Regarding the service, on a used BCD, you really don't know if it was properly cared for after diving - if it wasn't rinsed out properly, for example, it might have a buildup of salt crystals in the inflator or dump valves that...

Buying a used ladyhawk scubapro BCD would appreciate any help! :)

I don't know much about that model, but a 10-year-old used BCD had better have a great price! I've been seeing daily specials on some of the online dealer websites (Leisure Pro, Dive Right In Scuba) for down to half price this season. They are new, old or discontinued stock, but you'd get a...

Made in china "Scuba" air compressor

I could be wrong, but I seem to recall that one concern about using compressors not intended for air is that heat and friction might volatilize plastic-y bits in the system, putting toxic vapor into the air. If it's volatile, an oil/water filter may not remove it.

    Dive alert on rented gear?

Hi! I'm a newbie, and forked out for a surface alert. It has a standard low pressure inflator fitting at each end (male and female) so it should just fit in line with just about any BCD and low pressure hose, even rental units. Just don't forget to remove it when you turn the BCD back in after...

    Dive buddy

Nice invention! You could substitute Dyneema cordage for the cable - lighter and stronger than stainless steel.

South Florida trip coming. No dive buddy, tips on that and schedule?

Newly married? First marriage? Spouses always say they're okay with stuff, until they aren't okay with it. As a guy married for over 20 years, my honest advice is to cut that dive schedule by at least half. Either that, or see if your wife would like to go snorkeling, or do a Discover Scuba, or...

    Near Miss and Psychological Impacts

I've not had any close calls in diving, because I've only dove a very few times. However, I've crashed a couple of motorcycles, dumped a canoe or two in whitewater, folded up a wing at a few thousand feet with my paraglider, and fallen a few times rock climbing. With the exception of the...

Dive Knife That Could Also be Used for Camping

I'm a bit of a knife collector, with blades from a variety of companies, high-end and run-of-the-mill. My camping knifes tend to be more expensive, but I also scatter less expensive ones into various backpacks and survival BugOutBags, so I can be sure that I always have a decent blade with me...

    Shoehorn for Stout Scuba Sirens

Nice tip! BTW - search on "metal shoehorn" on Amazon, and you'll find lots of options, even in stainless or plated steel.

Question about drysuit patch - Bare XCD-2

Perfect advice! I hadn't though of the sanding drum idea - I'll do that instead of stinking up the house with burnt rubber and swearing. As lexvil suggests, I'll patch on the inside and any small gap on the outside I'll just fill in - no need for exterior patching I guess. Thanks! I'll likely...

Question about drysuit patch - Bare XCD-2

I bought a new Bare XCD-2 drysuit years ago, and never dove with it. I just inspected it and it's in great shape, except a mouse got into the storage bag and chewed a small (I'd say less than dime-sized) hole in the groin area - not over any seams. This is a hyper-compressed neoprene suit. It...

    Hello from Puget Sound!

More specifically, from Monroe, Washington, in Snohomish County, east of Everett and diving locations at Mukilteo, etc. I'm 64 - took the PADI open water classes with my wife in 2005, and received my OW certification in November. I then researched and bought pretty nice gear for my wife and I...
