large air bubble on a deep dive

The concern about the computer is that the air pocket is pressurized beyond sea level. It's going from a pressurized water environment to a pressurized air environment. Like I said, I never saw it happen, but didn't want to try it. I think the first time I heard it was from one of the computer...

large air bubble on a deep dive

I can look at the question as a kind of 'thought experiment.' It did remind me of a real life scenario. My buddy and I were on a dive along a rock wall and swam up under a ledge that went back to an air pocket 60 feet down. It was large enough for us to poke our heads up into it. Seems...

    Old School Scuba

Many years ago, I dressed up as Lloyd Bridges in vintage gear for an underwater costume contest. That was the exact rig I dove in. Buoyancy was not too hard, breath control and hand paddling. But not having a gauge was different. I had used my SAC rate to predict how much air I would use over a...

Anyone tried the Bism White Beans Reg?

I went back and forth through the thread, maybe I missed the answer. But the real question is, "White Beans??? Really?" Maybe it's a broken translation of something cool like 'White Sharkfish'. Perhaps it has some special meaning in Japanese culture. Was there some marketing research to this...

    RIP Dr. Bill

Even though I knew this day would come, it's still devastating. It seems like we're losing good peeps faster that the community is growing. I sometimes wonder where the next generation is going to come from.

New charges for Sotis (Add helium)and Emilie Voissem (Nexus Underwater)

It's been a long thread but my understanding is that it was the shipping and logistics people that first became concerned about the rebreather deal. Maybe they were under some legal obligation to notify the government? I've never tried it but I think if I tried to ship some advanced tech to...

Avelo--I guess there's no need for me to recommend fundies anymore....

I was exposed to this idea a couple of years ago when it was being developed, I really didn't get much more info than what we have today. I assumed it was a composite wrap cylinder of some sort that could be removed from the shell and sent to hydro. My understanding was that the magic of this...

Avelo--I guess there's no need for me to recommend fundies anymore....

I don't have any real info and even if I did, I wouldn't be allowed to talk about it. But, I know people who know people... This thing does exist and does function. But as the SB crowd has pointed out, success is going to be about price and ease of use. Like many new products, those will...

    titanium backplate

I worked for a tech manufacturer years ago that did a run of TI backplates but they never really pursued it. I ended up with one. It's slotted like a standard BP. The weight falls right between AL and steel so it doesn't have the advantage of being extra light nor the advantage of taking lead...

A Scuba Diving Instructor Salary Explained - How much do Dive Instructors earn?

Part of the issue is that it's a cool job that people are willing to do cheaply or for free. The same reason male porn actors get paid a tiny fraction of what female porn actors get paid. Like scuba, there is also economic pressure from amateur competitors. Anyone with a webcam and a paypal...

    Ice diving course?

It always seemed strange to me that ice diving never earned the rep that cave diving has. You know, the most dangerous sport on earth, etc... It is an overhead environment. In caves and wrecks, I have my spool and back-up spools so I'm managing my own line. In ice diving, you are tied to the...

Can I drink a few beers after diving?

I'm not a doctor but I've been in the dive industry a long time and I drink a lot. You should be ok.

Ascending to a lost boat - what should you do?

Many years ago, this happened to me in Belize. We came up and saw the boat 60-70 yards away and everybody on it was standing as tall as they could looking for us in the completely wrong direction while we drifted away. I gave a quick beep on my old school Dive Alert and we could see everybody...

Having issues with my CDF account... can anyone help?

Hey Everybody, Anybody here connected with cave diver's forum administratively? My account was logged out and I can't get back in. The 'lost password' function isn't working for me either and it won't allow me to 'Contact Us.' I don't really do any other social media so I have no way to reach...

    11 y/o Surfaces with Convulsions

I'm not a doctor or a hyperbaric physiologist but I've been a diver for a while. When I read the story, my first impression was an expansion injury with neurological involvement (CAGE). I would think medical exams could spot this but not sure what diagnostics would be used.

    Failed O2 cylinder valve

I've seen HP valve seats that were scorched by an oxygen burn. It was always pretty obvious (blackened, melty.) Not sure what's up with this scenario.
