Is certification necessary for shallow water diving?

I graduated from "Dad's School of Auto Mechanics and SCUBA School" back in '62. After passing an extensive test on the contents of "The New Science of Skin and SCUBA Diving" I did several dives under instruction, of which the instructor accompanied me for practice buddy breathing, since there...

    Lending Gear yay or nay

Within my regular group of dive buddies, or someone I am diving with. Haven't had an issue.

Help identify and rebuild US Divers first stage

As long as it was attached to the first. Unfortunately, the yoke is made for older valves, and won't fit on convertible valves and on most modern valves, as they are wider and thicker than the older ones. The good news is the reg works fine down to 40 meters the last time I had it out.

Help identify and rebuild US Divers first stage

A particular yoke attachment on a reg will have a limitation on the pressure it can handle dependent on its design. The yoke itself can be to handle pressures well over 3500#, however one can no longer get a tank over 3500# with a yoke valve, and at a certain point the size of the yoke would...

    Submersible IP gauge?

If there are, I'll bet they are expensive. However, one could use a cheap IP gauge and look at it as expendable.

    Tumbling Media?

That's interesting, it passes a DOT hydro with its mandatory visual inspection, but then fails a scuba industry VIP. Does this sound weird to anyone besides me?

    First (and last) regulator

One cannot be reborn without change.

    First (and last) regulator

I rest my case. Eventually we all die.

Not yet, send me a memo when it is.

    First (and last) regulator

Ourselves. Any serious diver that thinks that they will only have 1 reg set (recreational) or 2 reg sets (technical) is deluding themselves, it might happen, but I've not seen it. It's as rare as having regs by only one manufacturer. Get the reg you want to start, and work from there.

First regulator - purely recreational vs. tec suitable?

The SPG was first available in 1958 from Sportsways. In 1958, engineers from Sherwood Manufacturing modified the piston regulator for underwater. I believe the Healthways sonic was first sold in the '60's, I've seen ads for the Sonic 300 in 1970, the NEDU evaluated the 300 in 1975. Because of...

    Considering a Freedom Plate

I did, but we were neighbors back then and he dropped it off on his way home.

    Considering a Freedom Plate

It is evolving functional artwork, the freedom plate that I got back in the day is not the same as the pieces he makes today, but I won't give mine up either.

A nice Christmas story and a question about Scott Air-Paks

I believe they take the same 7/8-14UNF thread valve, used on 3500# tanks with 300bar DIN connector.

    CESA Question

That is because the understanding, training and practice of CSEA is non-existent in scuba training today. Prior to widespread use of the SPG, when using a j-valve, a CSEA was necessary if the valve was out of position, not a completely uncommon occurrence. With a K-valve, a CSEA it was normal...

    CESA Question

The big difference is that submarine escape is a buoyant ascent, and is more fun than keeping ones ascent less than 60 fpm, although the basic principles are the same. The buoyant ascent, in scuba, is next level of emergency procedure after the CSEA, and normally reserved for situations where...

    Water in SPG

Yes. Regardless of water in or oil out, it is a case o-ring failure, the bourdon tube will not be affected. What I would do should not be considered to be best practices. What I do is based on my knowledge of the gear, the dive, and what I know I can get away with.

Yeah, why they use a second second stage is beyond me, too.

    Conception trial begins

Once a fire spreads to the fiberglass over wood construction of that boat, the lithium battery fire and toxic gasses are nothing in comparison.
