Some LOBs require a minimum # of logged dives, but I don't have a log book!

Oh just go have fun. Bring your C-Cards that will prove experience and I am sure they will be satisfied by that. I've not had a LOB ask me for my number of dives. They may be just trying to cover their butts, liability, etc. I, personally, log most of my dives, dives that I consider real dives...

Birthday gadget purchase: help me choose!

I'd sell my soul (again?) if I could be staring down the barrel of my 30th birthday. 30, what an amazing age of a few decades ago. It's was like my teens, but with money. Go with the NITROX analyzer. You'll get lots of use out of that. Oh, and shut up about your age young lady. Enjoy it! 30's...

    Reported DCS on plane

Wait! What? A couple of dives to no more than 30 feet and 19 hours later he gets DCS? I don't think we're getting the full story.

Severe injury - San Carlos Beach, California

I was at the Breakwater last weekend. The only incident I am aware of that happened last Saturday was my friend's student. The diver was a student, he was unresponsive, he was in the ICU and put in a medically induced coma. I don't have the current status of the person. Two Saturday's before...

Severe injury - San Carlos Beach, California

I do know a friend of mine had a 71 year old student who started to act oddly on a swim back to shore. When they went to him in the water he was unresponsive. The diver was put into an induced coma and would be assessed Sunday night/Monday morning. I have no other updates on his condition. I'll...

Monterey conditions. (let's keep it going )

Not a good weekend for visibility at The Breakwater. 5 feet at most. Water Temp 57. Thermocline past 30 feet had water temp at 52F at 40 feet. Today a very strong current could be felt around 4 on the wall. If you didn't move you'd suddenly find yourself at 7 in no time at all. This made for a...

    Bucket list dive spots?

You're welcome. However, after reading the bounce dive comment I felt I owed ScubaBoard an explanation. I feared my original post made me sound like a reckless, maverick, even dangerous diver. I am the complete opposite. So I thought a fun, and true, story of who I am as a person and why this...

    Bucket list dive spots?

I am in no way normalizing it, and you are correct, it s not a thing to be taken lightly and should never be seen as a rite of passage. I only answered the question of what was MY bucket list dive. You are 100% correct about it being an extremely risky endeavor.

    Bucket list dive spots?

OK everyone. This is going to be nice comment so you can get into my head. It's about the "Bounce Dive" comment. To me it's all about the planning that excites me. At 400 feet I'll see whatever mud my light shines on and maybe some sort of sea slug. That's not why I want to do it. I want to do...

    Bucket list dive spots?

Thank You!!! I could not comprehend the criticism of something I want to do before I die. So I bit my tongue. Which is extremely difficult for a native NYer to do. LOL!

Owning cylinders - is it worth it?

You're taking the class or teaching it. I think it would be fun to learn how to vis my own tanks.

Owning cylinders - is it worth it?

I know I'm coming late with a comment but I have to agree with what everyone says. For me, having my own tanks is a feeling of freedom. I don't have to go to the dive shop and pick up tanks. That helps me get to the dive site early and get Princess Parking at the Breakwater if it's a day working...

Just went crazy buying new gear ($1400 Atomic BC1 BCD, TWO Atomic Cobalts, B2, M1, SS1..) STOP ME!!!

Gotta agree with you there. All my BCDs are either back inflate or BP/W. I really hate full vests. I'm just not comfortable with them in the water.

Just went crazy buying new gear ($1400 Atomic BC1 BCD, TWO Atomic Cobalts, B2, M1, SS1..) STOP ME!!!

You should go professional and start getting keyman pricing. Then you're gear spending will truly go through the roof.

Who cares about vis. I don't care if it's a dive by braille day. I'm just happy to be in the ocean.

What are the Essential Skills you need to have down before considering diving solo?

The pilot in me loves redundancy. I never dive without at least 2 computers and both digital and analog SPG. I expect man-made devices to fail.

What are the Essential Skills you need to have down before considering diving solo?

I've never given this any thought. I generally never dive solo but when I do it is to set the float before a weekend class of open water students. I must say, being out there alone around 7am, just me and the ocean, is so very peaceful. I truly enjoy it. Things to think of before diving solo...
