    Egypt Update

Wow.. I had no idea things were still pretty heated in the "come to Egypt/ don't come to Egypt" camp. I'm with Crowley. If there had been any risk to my own safety, I would have packed my lappie, hubbie and the cat (not in that order of course) and high tailed it out of here. Anyway, Sharm is...

    Mubarak resigns!

So well said Crowley.. I know I am a little late with my reaction here.. but what a momentous day for Egypt. Like you I was completely dismayed by Mubarak's speech on Thursday night, totally depressed by Friday morning thinking that the only end that I could see was a violent one, with...

Trip to Sharm scheduled for feb 27 - march 4th. Are we crazy to still be considering?

Hi there, for GabrielOak and DrBill, to reassure you, all is calm in the Red Sea resorts of Sinai. I am based in Sharm el Sheikh, and as Crowley said, had we not been transfixed by our television sets, we would never have even known that a revolution was underway! It has been quite bizarre how...

Red Sea Jaws - Channel 5 documentary

I too have heard reports that in the end, the program was refreshingly well researched. I too baulked when I saw the title and inaccuracies on the teaser page. Maybe the title was chosen specifically to draw in the masses in the hope of opening their eyes and educating them a little. I hope so...

Suspension of all diving and watersports activities in Sharm el Sheikh

Oh the fun n games... still no rescue courses allowed, in case it scares the tourists... so I have a feeling I will be heading up to Dahab for scenario day on Monday...

Suspension of all diving and watersports activities in Sharm el Sheikh

Yep, we too are based in Naama Bay and have had to drag all our students up to Shark's Bay today... OK I guess that is better than having to bus them through the desert to Dahab (much as I like Dahab), but as Crowley says, it quite clearly states that it is OK to dive in Naama Bay. Confused...

Did it really snow on Sharm yesterday?

We were at Near Garden... torrential it was.. for about an hour or more while we ate lunch. In Hadaba it only rained for about fifteen minutes apparently. I just thought the white bits were very big blobs of rain until someone handed me a hailstone!!

Did it really snow on Sharm yesterday?

No it didn't snow.. but we had hail and lashings of rain! We were diving local so managed to get off the jetty when it opened... did both dives in the morning, so were able to enjoy the torrents of rain while we ate lunch on the way back. Fantastic thunderstorm hit in the evening too... woo hoo!

Suspension of all diving and watersports activities in Sharm el Sheikh

It is a tragedy both for the snorklers, for the shark and maybe even for Sharm if they don't manage to address the situation. I have a sinking feeling that they will probably kill the shark should they find it, and no matter what the victims were doing at the time, their lives have been...

Isn't Nuweiba very under-rated for diving experience and value?

Wow! What a heated debate over whether an area is worth diving or not. In reply to the post above.. I live and work in Sharm and if you are being offered mere 45 minute dives, then you are being short changed. We always offer the full hour (as long as you are good enough on air) and there is...

    Sharm El-Sheikh F.A.Q.

Hey Rob, Good luck with sorting out your trip. October is a fantastic time to come over here, as the water is still warm, but the weather a little cooler than the 105ºF we are getting at the moment. As for January, yes it can get cool, especially at night. You will be surprised to find you...

Multilevel Recreational Dive Planner vs the RDP for multilevel dive

I too have seen that method of planning multilevel dives using the normal RDP, and a zero surface interval, however there are some fundamental safety aspects missing from this method, that are addressed by using the E-RDP ML (multilevel electronic RDP). The main point that is not addressed by...

Ship hits Woodhouse Reef, Tiran, Sharm El Sheikh

The reef in this area is all protected. If a ship under your control crashes into it, for whatever reason, you are fined per square metre of damage. The fine that they received is actually less than it should have been (I don't know if the 20million is the amount or not however) as when the...

Ship hits Woodhouse Reef, Tiran, Sharm El Sheikh

Yes, apparently she has been finally floated off the reef. Yesterday a group of divers were planning to mark up and assess the damage. Partly for research, and party to work out how much the company will be fined for the damage caused. They will be charged according to the area of coral...

Ship hits Woodhouse Reef, Tiran, Sharm El Sheikh

Well I was in Ras Mohammed today and saw a container ship heading southward, which the crew on my boat reckoned was the stricken ship.. hmmm not sure if it would have been able to float after that incident, but if it was, then that can only be good news. Sadly the reef will not be recovering...

Ship hits Woodhouse Reef, Tiran, Sharm El Sheikh

Very cool shot. The bizarre thing is that the shipping lane is two reefs to the ship's right not left. I wonder why they were even in the middle of the gulf. They should have been following the coastline down to the right hand side of Gordon Reef... if they were to hit any reef it should have...

Ship hits Woodhouse Reef, Tiran, Sharm El Sheikh

I am just astounded that a ship can hit this reef in broad daylight. It is so waay off route. There are two clearly marked shipping lanes that are a couple of reefs either side of Woodhouse which kind of sits right in the middle of the gulf. I hope the damage to the reef itself is not too...

Red Sea liveaboard Emperor Fraser sinks

Any kind of dive accident is never good news. Thankfully no one was hurt, and even some possessions recovered. Sadly the boat is no more. And as Red Sea Shadow said, it will no doubt get broken down pretty quickly, so I don't think it will become a new feature of the dive site.

Just so you know.. Umbi can arrange boat diving for you as well as shore stuff. I had forgotten about them.. really nice chilled out atmosphere up at Shark's Bay...
