Dumbing down of scuba certification courses (PADI) - what have we missed?

Hi Bolderjohn, Like you, I have seen both good and bad instructors and good and bad students from ALL agencies. Like you also, I would never have passed these students and if the instructors had worked for my dive center, there would have been remedial training and probation for them. Like...

    Thinking of replacing my regs

I suggest you take your Delta 4 to your LDS and make sure it is in tune. Sometimes out of the box regs that aren't checked are out of tune due to shipping. That may be all you need to do. Usually the Delta 4 is a great breathing reg.

    Solo diving

I agree 100% with the above. However I would also add that you need a minimum of 100 hours total dive time in addition to the 100 dives. These should all be MINIMUMS. Then ask yourself "Do I think I'm ready". If the answer is yes, and not just due to not being able to find dive buddies, then...

    Quest for a drysuit

Otter, Sorry to hear about your problems with your drysuit. I don't know your drysuit training background, so please don't be insulted if I cover something you are already familiar with. 1st of all, make sure you are properly weighted with your drysuit. You should only have enough...

    Weight Belt Under BP Harness?

PADI teaches the weightbelt on top and clear of everything for RECREATIONAL diving. For tech, they teach that ditching or loosing the weightbelt is the LAST thing you want to happen. They even mention using 2 buckles on the weight belt to prevent this. Having the belt under the harness in tech...

    Product Design - Scuba Equipment/Gear

How about a back plate that can take the weight of the scuba unit off of the shoulders and place it on the hips like a hiking backpack. This way someone with a back injury like myself can use them.

I have a Dumb Question re: Octos

Hi Stacy, 1st, there is no such thing as a dumb question. 2nd, as the others above have mentioned, with the Air 2, your primary regulator (the one you are breathing from) becomes the octopus, and the Air 2 is your secondary. This means 2 things - first is that your primary should now...

bp/w, singles or doubles? for diving in New Jersey area

Hi Bill, Diveandclimb is absolutely correct. The majority of divers here are recreational divers with either jacket style or back inflate BCDs. Dive with the configuration you are comfortable in. There is no reason to change unless you are going into tech or some specialty which requires...

Donning and doff your integrated bc??

The idea of distributing the weight between a wt belt/harness and the BCD is probably the best option. However some of the weight intergrated BCDs make it very hard to wear a wt belt or harness. In that case, I suggest you have large cargo pockets on your wetsuit or drysuit. This way you can...

    Why not BP/W for Beginner?

There is absolutely no reason a new diver cannot use a BP/W. Many students are taught from the start in this configuration. That being said, before you purchase your BCD, try out several styles in the pool first. If possible, try a BP/W, Back Inflation BCD (like Dive Rite, Hollis, Zeagle etc)...

Nothing wrong with an AL boat - they are rugged and they last. Get it and enjoy it.

What brand /model speargun/ pole spear do you use?

Hi Chad, We sell internationally, so our base is right across the board. Locally it's scuba divers mainly, but abroad it's mainly free divers. I have to admit, I personally have a lot to learn in this area. Take Care, George

    Seals at MacAbee Beach (Saturday)

Great video! It almost looks like the seal was trying to nurse off of the diver in the beginning. Cute little fella (girl?) I guess the fins must have tasted good!

Leisure Pro vs. Other Internet Retailers

Salvo is taken also, as is all the other major brands. You can't compete when the manufactures won't sell to you because you are in another dealer's territory. The shop I mentioned has been around for 30 years - it's NOT a johnny come lately. They know the game and the industry. If they could...
