So what is a basic certification today?

I'm pretty much reliant on UW electronics. I don't have redundancy for them. I don't think I'm in the minority here, but I could be wrong.

Why are they all trying to bite you? :)

    Deaf/HoH divers and ASL signers

Thanks, I just looked them up, $59.95 at Amazon...that is a lot of airfills...I need to just find some deaf friends that want to dive! Or find some friends that want to be able to communicate underwater better and share the cost of the books.

    Deaf/HoH divers and ASL signers

I hope so, I would like to have some people that I work with practice it with me, that was really nice. Also, it was good to learn like you said "how to sign", not just how the sign is made...& they taught me all of the things that books won't teach you either :)

So what is a basic certification today?

So, is the timer on the computer not just as good as a watch? I'll agree that everyone should have had some sort of timer, but I don't think you have to have a watch.

Mask on top of head - Diver in distress?

Can people who PAY to go to work actually be fired?

    Deaf/HoH divers and ASL signers

I knew a lot of ASL on my last job. 5 of the guys that worked for me were deaf. Unfortunately, when you don't use it, you lose it. I can still pick up what people are telling me, but I have to finger spell a lot of things. I think I'll pick up the Signing Naturally books. My wife took a Sea...

Point and shoot for experienced land photographer?

My pics in my gallery were taken with a canon s-70. I needed something easy as well, I don't remember how much I spent, but I know I didn't want to spend a lot either. I got lots of advice here on SB before I bought it...btw, thanks again to everyone :)

US researchers find 18th-century British warships

So just look for piles of Rocks off of Rhode Island, and you can call it a shipwreck :) Still interesting, and strange that if they are in only 30 ft. of water, they weren't found before now. Neat to think there are still unfound treasures out there for us to find.

    Seahorse Saddle......guess not!

I wasn't sure what was so funny until I scanned down the page to read the description. Why on earth would you bid on something you could never use? Why would you even look at something you could never use? Must be like a gambling addiction. :)

packing your gear on international trips

I have always taken my roll on for my BC, wetsuit, lights & fins. I also take a backpack, that I carry-on if the trip is 2 weeks or less. I use a North Face Terra 40, about as big as carry-on will allow. I pack my reg, mask & computer in with all my clothes. I don't mind renting the stuff in...

    Diving depths - with kids

Well, I got to assist on teaching, and the thing about kids is that they are in school, and used to studying and taking tests. My son did better on his test than my wife and all of the other students (all adults) that were in his class. Needless to say, it was fun to grade those tests, and...

Mask on top of head - Diver in distress?

I've dropped a mask by putting it on my forehead, and I was in stress after that (stress about not having a spare) so maybe it really is true!

    Diving depths - with kids

The only danger I've encountered with my 10 y.o. is paying more attention to him and not enough to myself. He's been diving for 2 years now. Started in Roatan, in about 10 f.s.w. now that is a shallow reef if you really want to stick to the 40' rule. This year in Coz, he averaged around 65'...

    Costa Rica Trip

I went last year about that time frame. Stayed in Playa Del Coco, flew into Liberia. Stayed with www.hotel-villa-flores.com and dove with www.richcoastdiving.com Both were fantastic. The hotel was amazing, and we had breakfast included which was really nice. They also have some great food...

Best Way to Get to Utila

And by best, I mean easiest, and fastest. I can't imagine price is going to be too much different, and in fact the price isn't really a concern for me at this point. I'm going to be staying with a friend, and he had an interesting experience getting there. If I was going to stay for good, I...

    Wetsuit thickness for Costa Rica?

I dove Costa Rica last year in late July, and used a 3mm full suit, and was fine. All the pics in my gallery are from there. I had a blast, and would love to go back. Just be prepared to see about 5 ft on one dive and 100 ft on the next dive! Make sure you go to the Catalinas, even if...

    It's so depressing

I also like to hit the "Worlds Worst BBQ" although I never remember what it's actual name is. I seriously need to find out how to make the Hula Huts fish tacos. I crave those things all the time, and I have to suffer with sub par here in KC.

    It's so depressing

Well, that doesn't sound that bad to me. I would love it if the record high where I live was 82. Austin gets hot, but I love that place. I think maybe you are just missing Austin, what a great place...now I'm missing Austin...fish tacos at Hula Hut...mmmmm!
