Anyone have an opinion on those XS Scuba Provalve things with the sliding concentric collars? Obviously a gear solution to a skill problem but are they good valves otherwise?
Most guys here pack WAY heavier than I do. Didn’t know I was such a minimalist.
-gigantic old Scubapro dive knife on my weight belt
-little backup light, even in clear water and bright sun
These days solo shore diving is the only sort I seem to do so I also take:
-pony bottle
-key ring (car has...
Just took the ferry from Nanimo to Vancouver and it was listing noticeably to starboard. Guess there were a few heavier trucks on that side, not like they weigh them all at the dock first. Did not feel unsafe, did not request the crew turn around and let me off, survived to tell the story. I’m...
Yesterday I soloed Ogden Point, Victoria. The Surf Motel kindly loaned me a wheelbarrow to haul my gear out to the lighthouse, that makes a big chore into a pleasure. Good conditions, good dives, nothing spectacular to report though.
Ya that’s not how that works but I’m sure they knew that. Could they even see the top of the wreck from there though? If they could that would be impressive vis, if they couldn’t it’s no different than any bottomless bounce dive. That’s pushing things further than I would but it’s not totally...
My regs are yoke for compatibility with rental tanks and I’ve never had any trouble with them. Always thought it was a goofy setup though, way more bulky and complex than it has any need for. Din is obviously superior in every way. One of those technical legacies like qwerty keyboards or...
Canada and many other places use the plastic bills developed in Australia now. They can be slippery and difficult to count but I like them overall. Immune to even long term salt water immersion, just tuck it in the wetsuit or something. Modern car keys are the trickier problem but my ride uses...
Looks very slow compared to a two place kayak. If you’re not trying to paddle it I suppose that doesn’t matter as much. Would you be soloing or have two guys in there?
They’re handy for all sorts of jobs, not just cutting free from entanglement. But if you DO have an underwater knife fight, a bigger knife is certainly better!
If there’s someone on the boat they might as well drift as they watch your bubbles. If it’s an empty boat I’d want to plant the anchor myself, or better yet chain it right to a wreck or something.
I’ve got plenty of experience climbing into RIBs and there’s no really great way. Usually simpler...
Those are very useful for fishing boats, if you can keep them alive, not as much here. If they want to know what goes on they can tune into Shark Week (“It’s a bad time to be a seal!”) or lurk this very forum for reviews. It’s kinda hard to keep industrial secrets on a boat full of camera-toting...
Venting air on the boat to solve a weight problem raised an eyebrow! It works, sure, but I’d have ditched something else. How much does the computer weigh, or any emergency gear he might carry… Also bizarre he didn’t have ANY ditchable weight in the first place: what’s his process for routine...
Scott Air-Pak bottles have precise gauges built into the valve. It’s very handy but I doubt it would work as well for scuba. Some sort of pin gauge that just indicates if it’s full or not might be nice in a busy shop that’s juggling tanks all day, doubt they would pay for it though.
So annoying. I try to buy vented hoods but if they don’t come with a quick stab with the knife usually solves the problem. It’s probably because I have a big moustache and am always clearing the mask.
That’s a tragedy, sort of, but still doesn’t make sense. Does anyone in the Mexican government care about the accidental death of a fish in 2019, given all the real problems the Mexican government has today?! What are the political forces driving this?
My fav site is Ogden Point, Victoria, BC. It’s not as spectacular as some others mentioned here but it’s got a lot to offer, there’s reliable wolf eels, ling cod, rock fish, and great pacific octopus. Seals, otters, and getting swarmed by sea lions are possible.
But the weird thing is you’re...
Being able to say “my last dive was yesterday afternoon, when I put on my gear and walked into the water” is worth quite a bit. If you didn’t forget anything and it all worked and you didn’t die that already puts you ahead of the pack when they’re loading the boat. A low pressure shore dive...
