    Proper Nitrox ID

Yea, I read post 16 and 20. Looks like the CFR is addressing transportation of a hazardous material in commerce. Doesn't seem like it would apply to a shop filling a scuba tank for an individual.

    Proper Nitrox ID

Im talking about cylinders - a tank does not have to be O2 cleaned to be filled using banked nitrox. If you fill using partial pressure where you are putting pure 02 into the tank, then the tank needs to be O2 cleaned. The VIP sticker will be marked as such.

    Proper Nitrox ID

Using banked nitrox does not require O2 cleaning. There's no danger, no fines, no problem.

    Proper Nitrox ID

I look at it more of how the tank is filled than the contents. I have two LP-95s, one is O2 cleaned and I use it for boats/location that fill partial pressure or have the right kind of filters. The other is not O2 cleaned and I use it on boat/locations that pump air or have banked nitrox. Either...

    Attaching fins to BC

I do a lot of shore diving and never thought of attaching my fins to my BC. I have one in each hand, holding on to the ss spring strap, at the right time (depth, and between sets) I make the number 4 one leg a time and go - just a few seconds. not sure what the advantage is to attaching fins...

    Best brands for recreational divers?

Yes, I meant Lapenta - sorry about that. Edge is a great option.

    Best brands for recreational divers?

any brand will work fine, you may want to consider the annual maintenance cost along with the acquisition cost. Some brands give you free parts. Additionally, consider what your local shops service and what brands are serviced where you do most of your vacationing. Personally, I would not go for...

    Bringing dive knife to SoCal

Not sure way someone would tell you not to bring a knife, you should definitely have on when you are diving - just throw it in your checked baggage and don't worry about it. Attached is picture of my dive knife.

if you are thinking of trying this....DO IT

I've been looking at the UTD sidemont system but I'm pretty happy with my DSS single backmount with a steel LP95. Just can seem to justify the switch....but I'm trying.

what do you consider an advanced dive?

Well said and I agree. To answer the OP, I don't think there is much value in trying to label a site as "advanced" or otherwise. As said earlier, the operators in SoCal don't seem to label sites but my experience on the east coast is different - operators require "advanced certs" for a lot of...

    regulator with side exhaust vent?

Aqualung Kronos - I have one and like it. I bought it because it was on sale not for the side exhaust but now that I have it I really the side port. When I use a different reg it takes me a few min to get used to the bubbles. There are several side exhaust options as mentioned above.

what do you consider an advanced dive?

The "so what" question comes to mind. So if you deem a dive to be an "Advanced Dive" then what? As all ready stated advanced will mean different things to different people. As for regions, dive locations/operators in the SoCal (San Diego) region generally do not label dives as "advanced" for...

    Planning a December Cal trip

nice plan, but I would want to do more dives per day especially at Casino point - long way to go for just two dives. Anacapa on the Spectre boat 4 dives - good call.

    Visiting SD Area..Need Advise Please

I live in San Diego. 7mm wet suit with gloves and hood is the standard for wet diving. Plenty of shops can rent you what ever you need, I like San Diego Divers or IB divers. The Marisa Dive boat is very good and pretty reasonable. Shore diving from La Jolla Shores or La Jolla Cove is also a...

    HOG regulator free flows

Two thoughts: 1) did you really need to establish an air-share, how much air did he have left? Were you his buddy? 2) when the free flow started and after establishing an air-share why not just turn off your tank? Kinking the hose worked but depending on the type of hose it may not and you...

Teen fatality - Skaneateles Lake, New York

the point is that 60' on dive #10 is not in itself unreasonable, especially if he was with experienced divers.

Teen fatality - Skaneateles Lake, New York

Consider in some areas like here in San Diego, the training dives done for OW cert are at 60' in 50 - 60 degree water probably using the shops rental gear. 60' on dive #10 with two other experienced divers is very reasonable.

    We might stop diving

Yes, you should stop diving - no question. I do not agree that the dive industry shares any blame, there are plenty of agencies that provide quality training One of the great things about the diving industry is that's it pretty much unregulated, lets keep it that way. Diving is not...

What % of your weight should be ditch-able?

Well said and I agree. Although the weight of the air in the tank is dynamic I think its a good rule. My LP 95 is 8lbs neg full, I carry 6 lbs ditch-able. ---------- Post added October 14th, 2013 at 03:49 PM ---------- I don't really agree with this. for example, diving the oil rigs with no...
