SoCal Fish ID episode of Dr. Bill's cable TV show

Nice, I get the Sargo and Pile surf perch mixed up. This will be a good reference for my Reef surveys.

What kind of and why do agencies put requirements on shops?

Based on a thread about shops not reusing mouthpieces, I asked why would SSI or any agency would care how a shop maintained its gear beyond the basics (qualified techs)? I can understand agencies like SSI and others wanting the shops they are affiliated with to conform to certain standards...

My LDS will no longer rent regs with mouthpiece.

No, I'm not kidding. Sounds interesting. I'll start it up.

My LDS will no longer rent regs with mouthpiece.

I don’t see as marketing but more accounting. They are passing part of the cost of maintenance to the customer in the form of a sale instead of raising the rental rate. Logistically, it would probably be easier to raise the rental rate and replace all mouthpieces each time a reg comes...

    steel tank help

An hour for $35 tank is pretty risky. But get some pictures, the size, brand and date of manufacture - maybe its a really great find but I doubt it. There is a reason its only $35.

My LDS will no longer rent regs with mouthpiece.

Crazy. Have not seen that around here (San Diego)....yet. We share air all the time, do an S-drill on practically every dive. You can't really simulate an air share exercise.

My LDS will no longer rent regs with mouthpiece.

Crazy. Have not seen it yet around here (San Diego)...yet. We share air all the time - run an S-drill on pratically every dive. You can't really simulate an airshare exercise.

    Balance BCD with Air-2 $200.00

This Balance back inflate BC has about 50 dives on it and is about 2 years old - i bought it brand new at Sport Chalet. The Aqua Lung Airsource is only about a year old and has maybe 20 dives on it, I also bought it new. The BCD also comes with the standard inflater with hose, Airsource with...

Safe procedures for children's swimming pool try-dive?

PADI does discover SCUBA in a pool. My kids did it at about 12 years old, the pool is 12 feet deep at the Sport Chalet here in San Diego. Pretty much one on one with the instructor. Seemed pretty safe and well run.

A FB friend posted his brother died today in Ginnie Springs

Then you do blame the buddies, they let him take the wrong gas which is part of the combined breathing gas. I'm not saying its all the fault of the buddies but they sure share in it - if not then whats the purpose of a buddy? Part of the buddy's job is the throw the bull **** flag when things...

La Jolla diving Sat Aug 17?

Check out Power Scuba, we dive La Jolla Cove every Sunday and there is usually a La Jolla shores dive most Saturdays. I usually get there around 0630 and there is plenty of parking at that time - but it fills up fast after that. I will definately be at the cove on Sunday and maybe at the...

A FB friend posted his brother died today in Ginnie Springs

Making a team mate that you are about to go diving with re-check a tank that is admittedly mislabeled is not in any way being a PITA. In fact I can’t think of anything more important. The team only works if everyone does their job, it’s unconscionable that the team allowed this...

My tank nearly slid off my BCD yesterday. What would you do?

If the last time you did this was in your PADI training in confined water several years ago, removing your BC and tightening the cam-ban or strap at 60ft, in the ocean, alone may be much harder than you think. Just getting the leverage to tighten the strap could be difficult.

    Non-certified diver fatality - Arkansas

I don't doubt what Ken is saying but in my experience I have never been asked for a C-card to buy gear. Including both small LDSs and the big box stores like Sport Chalet. There must be something to this, for a store to be so adamant about seeing a c-card for an air fill or rental but buying the...

PADI SSI and equipment tie ins

Same with UTD. Although UTD has gear requirements they do not push any specific brand. Its great to have a conversation about gear with your instructors and get completely unbiased advice. I use a DSS BP/W, FWIW.

Wearing a snorkel in a pond

Lots of opinions both ways on the snorkel, NAUI requires it during training and I believe so does Padi. On the other hand, UTD and GUE don't. I ditched the snorkel a long time ago, I found it got in the way and more of a hindrance than useful. My logic: it adds absolutely no value while...
