    SCUBA sales Reps. on Board?

About the Apeks and Halcyon, I am completely unbiased, but I know that both companies produce top of the line gear. I don't use halcyon, but I love my apeks regs with a passion. I really wouldn't trade them for anything (except the apeks atx200). So it is fitting that they would get plugged...

What can the human body handle?

I believe that you can theoretically go as deep as you want (Source: USN diving manual, I think), until the breathing gas becomes too viscous/dense to breath easily. You will also run into problems with compressing the gas needed--once you get to about a mile, water starts filling a full...

    Bungee'd Octo

I got my bungee at a climbing shop. Usually Marine Stores (west marine, etc.) and dive shops have it. I couldn't find any of the thickness I needed (~1/8") at hardware stores. When tying it on some people use the mouthpieces zip tie. I tied (using three or four half-hitches, really tight)...

    Sasy

I tried that once. There was so much bouyancy that I had to grab rocks from the shore. It did make my ascent from 95 feet easier, just let go. brandon ps: seriously, why would kids need this. give em a snorkel--that's how I learned.

    Multi-level tables

I've heard that PADI instructors have had their certification revoked for teaching multi-level on their standard tables (not the wheel). Nonetheless, an anonymous source taught me how to do it. It's actually really simple, and it works with almost all tables. There are two methods, one...

    Faulty PADI Question

Thanks Guys! Very informative answers. Paul, that's a good idea. I'll be on some NC wrecks at ~120 (sand) and bring some blood. Maybe then I'll get to see some sharks. brandon

    How Deep do you Dive?

The NOAA exposure limit is 1.6 pO2 for 45 minutes. On EAN32 that is 130 feet. You should plan for 1.4 pO2, but it is not really a problem to drop down to (or even a few feet past) 130. Not that it should be a regular occurence, but it's not suicide. brandon

    Faulty PADI Question

I don't know whether to put this here or dive medicine, so please forgive me. I recently took the PADI rescue diver course. On the final exam, I missed two questions. one was about the color of blood at depth, which didn't seem like it had any importance. The other was worded something...

    question

Isn't coughing a sign of DCS (the Chokes)? Other than that I don't think that you could rule out any sort of overexpansion injury. Definately check with DAN. brandon

How Old Were You When You Started SCUBA?

God, I've wanted to dive ever since I can remember. I always used to play scuba diver with my brothers and snorkel aroung in the pool. My parents even have stories that I wrote about "skuber" diving when I was in kindergarden. I used to beg them to take me to the dive shop. When I turned 12...

    How Deep do you Dive?

One thing I haven't noticed is people referencing their deep dives to locations. For example, a dive to 130 in the warm clear water of Grand Cayman would not seem like much of a challenge. On the other hand, a cold murky open ocean dive (ie, northeast wreck) to 80 feet would be an even greater...

    Hot Tubbing

Lots of dive places advertise that they have hot tubs, but, since fluids saturate with gases sooner at higher temperatures, wouldn't being hot after a dive increase the risk of bends? brandon

If you were to have a new place to dive and frequent often..

Drinks? You guys obviously don't dive around North Carolina. You'd have to expressly forbid alcohol so that people don't come in drunk. On the other hand, the only think better than a swim up bar is a dive up bar. brandon

What would you do with steel 72's?

Windchimes. I could never have thought of that. It could aleviate the nostalgia that I feel during the winter. I love the satisfying bang of a steel tank, followed by the woosh of air and a string of profanities. Don't you just love to dive. brandon

What would you do with steel 72's?

If you cut off the bottom they make great candy dishes or cereal bowls. brandon

To what pressure are you filling your PST 104s to?

My shop will fill their rental lp steel tanks to 3200. They will fill it higher if you have DIN, bring in your own tank, or are special, like me. I have had em filled up to 3800 before. brandon

    Diver Rituals

Before each dive, I sacrifice and oxygen clean chicken to apease the gods of nitrox such that they will not allow my cylinder to explode. :D brandon

    Steel tank Wetsuit question

I have an HP120 and dive with a wetsuit . That's a double sin to the DIR crew. I don't have a problem maintaining proper bouyancy with it even though the swing weight is ten pounds. Doubles would not be a good idea, but you should be fine with a single steel tank. brandon

Bikini Atoll, deep air for everyone

Clearly, it is one thing to take a trained, experienced diver, with doubles and preferrably accelerated mixes (for extra redundancy) and go to 180 feet salt water. Its clearly not suicide. But with untrained, vacation divers there are not very good odds, especially for the divers I've seen...
