    Inquiry for home improvement types

Funny you ask...I was in Lowe's last night, picking up some new plantation shutters, when I decided to stop by the floor covering area. There are some pretty neat options available nowadays. For the kitchen, I'm interested in Armstrong's "glueless" vinyl sheet flooring. The stuff appears to...

Check your computer clock Sunday when you change your others

All these doomsday scenarios I'm hearing about the new DST rules reminds me of the same doomsday scenarios we were hearing about when it came to the so-called "Y2K" disaster. We were told how all our computers would crash at midnight on 1/1/00, and that anything that contained a computer chip...

    Finally...A Great Movie!

    J. Edgar cultivated an image of both himself, and the Bureau, to the point where the mythology far outstrips the reality. He not only was a lawman, but a very good PR man as well. Of course, long after his death, little "tidbits" have surfaced about him, just as the Bureau no longer enjoys...

My latest earthquake, about 5 minutes ago.

We'll gladly keep our natural disasters if you keep your nasty critters, in particular the drop bears and the Killer Kangaroux :D

South Carolina Deputy Killed in the Line of Duty

ReefGuy is correct...the jail simply did what it was ordered to do, and that was to let the suspect out on bond. Where it would have been the jail's fault is if the suspect was mistakenly released from custody.

Don't leave 1 of these in your vehicle

I especially can't understand why the police need to subpoena company records. A copy of the official police report should be sufficient. It would be like your insurance company refusing to cover you for your stolen car unless the police subpoena their records too

Anyone here ever buy a car on ebay?

Never bought a car on eBay, but I did buy a motorcycle that way last summer. I found it largely by accident. The guy had misclassified it and thus was getting no offers. My bid was the only one, thus I only paid his opening bid which was $600 below my first bid. I was satisfied between the...

The I-Pod Thread, tech support from your cohorts

TiVo is simply a video recording device similar to a VCR, except the programs are stored on a hard drive (similar to your computer) rather than on tape. It relies on the same broadcast feeds that go into your TV, so it's not "commercial-free" but rather you simply fast forward through the...

    Police Week in Washington DC

I have not been to Police Memorial Week at DC myself, but several at my department have. It's a very emotionally wrenching experience from what I've heard about it. I've visited the Memorial at Judiciary Square at a different time of year, and even that brought out some strong feelings. I...

Passenger Bill of Rights for air travel

My own experiences here. Last November, I was stuck inside an Air New Zealand flight for 3 hours, somewhere in the middle of LAX (and nowhere in sight of the terminal buildings), while they attempted to fix a cargo door. I can understand when a sudden change of weather traps your plane out...

Currently in US, what are the "must go" dive sites?

As Don already mentioned, the Florida Keys are best seen by car. There hasn't been train service in the Keys since the 1935 hurricane (the original bridges of the Overseas Highway are actually converted train bridges) and as you found out Greyhound isn't the speediest service in the world...

Is Calling Someone an Ahole and a Jerk Against Tos

Andy, All I'm saying is to give yourself a rest. Don't visit this board for about 6 hours. Have a nice, relaxing dinner before coming back here. Your perspective might be different after you've been away for a while. Mine certainly was. The thread in question has caused so much grief, for...

Is Calling Someone an Ahole and a Jerk Against Tos

Andy, While there were injustices done (allowing a clearly against-TOS comment to remain longer than it should have), something was finally done about it. The mods could have easily just made the thread disappear, no explanation whatsoever. But, Pete took the time to clean it up, not easy...

Is Calling Someone an Ahole and a Jerk Against Tos

Andy, you were not the only victim there. A few posts were specifically made to bash me personally. Doc's just trying to stop a war. I agree that something should have been said earlier against the person who made those remarks to you.

Is criticism of Moderators a bannable offense?

It would be like you getting pulled over for a traffic violation, and the officer telling everybody within earshot "Hey look at this knucklehead, he ran a red light cuz he was too busy yakking on his cell phone and now he's gotta pay $340!" Just because you made a mistake in public, doesn't...

How has SB made a difference?

Travel ideas. I've learned a lot about dive destinations and especially dive operators from this site. I chose one (B&B Scuba of Maui) solely on the basis of many recommendations from the Hawaii O'hana forum, and now I recommend them as well.

Is criticism of Moderators a bannable offense?

Pete, I think you're "missing the forest for the trees" here. Most of us have not gone through the "mysterious changing of passwords" and "sudden vacations" that has been mentioned. But, I have witnessed quite a bit of heavy-handed moderating here. I've been a victim of it myself, on...
