    Quick Nitrox Question

There are no absolutes, but it is a good idea to minimise any error in each process of analysis to prevent any compounding.

    Quick Nitrox Question

I've seen many times a +1% difference between tank air and atmospheric air based on humidity alone. If you have an air calibrated analyser reading a nitrox tank at 31.6% O2 you would set it in your computer as 32%, but may only have 30.6% O2, possibly less. Put several small errors together...

    Quick Nitrox Question

Many years working in a lab has enforced scientific control when it comes to analysing nitrox. To me, anything else would just be a guess. ;)

    Quick Nitrox Question

In the tropics I've seen a 1% difference in O2 measurements between tank air and atmospheric air. Due to the setup of the analyser, pressure and temperature were not a factor. It was all down to the humidity. With a lot of unknowns I would set the analyser to atmospheric air, calibrate on tank...

PADI Master Scuba Diver - what does it give you?

I would assume that too. And no matter how much I would hope for the best, I would also plan for the worst. Hence my thoughts on diver evaluation.

PADI Master Scuba Diver - what does it give you?

I've only been a PADI pro for 5 years and in that time I have never seen an MSD card presented to me for proof of experience or training. Likewise in that time I have only certified one diver as an MSD. They came onboard my boat with 4 specs and rescue and completed an EANx course and paid extra...

Still worth it without a liveaboard? Cairns/Port douglas

Taka no longer does the Cod Hole / Osprey trip. It still acts as a liveabaord but is stationed on Norman / Saxon reef there are daily transfers with the Divers Den dayboat from Cairns. Shame as it was a good budget option to get to Osprey. Re: the Yongala, the quick trip actually runs from Alva...

Where to stay at Great Barrier Reef

There are quite a few places where you can effectively dive the GBR from the mainland or an island (short boat trip required). Consider the Whitsundays / Heron Island. So many others to choose from though.

Still worth it without a liveaboard? Cairns/Port douglas

From my own recreational and occupational diving on the GBR I would say this. The very best diving would be on the Spirit of Freedom, Spoilsport or Scubapro (ProDive) liveaboards from Cairns. Next come the day boats and a couple of other liveaboards such as Taka or Reef Explorer, however these...

    DM internship in OZ...

Once you've got your DM why not go for Instructor? Divers Den in Cairns take on DMs. The idea is that you work for them for a few months, and rather than getting paid you earn credit to pay for your IDC. You'll have to cover some fees such as the IE, accom and food etc. but you'll gain several...

    Invasive species in Oz

It sounds like you have Sydney covered so I'll focus on Cairns. Personally I think you'll have trouble seeing the best Cairns has to offer by doing day trips only. The reefs (Outer Reefs) you'll see will be visited by hundreds of divers each week, and this will show. I would recommend doing at...

    Invasive species in Oz

How long will you be in each location? How will you be travelling between the two? What proportion of your time there do you want to spend diving? Are you looking at budget, mid or high range diving/accommodation?

Have you ever seen the crown-of-thorns starfish in the Great Barrier Reef?

Hi Fernanda, I've worked on the GBR about for two years from 2008-2010. I've seen the crown of thorns five times in that period but can only remember two of the sightings with enough detail to report on. I'll email you and respond asap.

    Diving in Aarhus (DK)

Have a look at N.O.W. Dive. They are based in Skanderborg, only about 20 mins from Arhus by train. They do trips to Norway and the Med amongst others, offer tuition from OW to Tech, and have a very active club. Prices are very reasonable and the staff friendly and experienced. I've been diving...

1-day of diving when staying in Cairns- recommendations!

You'll probably find that trying to do 3 dives on a dayboat from Cairns will be hurried. The crew will be is a rush to get you in and out of the water, surface intervals and NDLs will be short, oh and it will cost more than two dives (except for the offer APS mentioned). I'd recommend going for...

    DM internship in OZ...

Re: Yongala Dive in Ayr, a few facts: 6 days on, 1 off Of your 6 days on, 3 should be on the boat and 3 at the lodge. Your days at the lodge would consist of preparing and cooking food for the guests, cleaning, transfers from Ayr-Alva, shopping runs, fuel runs. You are expected to live in the...

Looking for information on GBR live aboard trip in late April 2012

I've been on SOF in very rough seas and SS in much calmer waters so can't really say which would be better for you in that sense. On SS you would have a lot space on the dive deck and in cabins, whereas SOF does feel a lot more cramped. I wasn't aware that SS didn't offer internet, at least...

TOURIST DIES ON REEF SNORKELLING TRIP (on the GBR off Port Douglas QLD AUS)

I agree with most of your comments Aquapro, but to be fair the article did say that the man was at Saxon reef, which is effectively straight out from Port Douglas, and no claim was made to Port Douglas being the home port for this guy's trip.

Looking for information on GBR live aboard trip in late April 2012

Spoilsport is a catamaran and SOF a monohull. On your past experience you might be able work out which will be most comfortable for you. Personally I prefer a monohull in rough seas, but to be fair I've never had any trouble getting my legs.
