    Gear issue on dive

Personally, in confined open water I teach disconnect without reconnection. After the ascent my students have to orally inflate. Reconnecting isn't a problem, or against standards, but wherever possible I get my students to orally inflate. If/when the time comes that they need to orally...

    Gear issue on dive

PADI OW only requires a disconnect of the LPI on the surface or underwater, no reconnect (why would you?). This is in case of a free-flow LPI, and if taught correctly allows students to start or continue a dive with a malfunctioning LPI.

    Returning to diving after antidepressants?

I've just signed off an OW diver who was taking antidepressants. She'd had a full dive medical and been given clearance, so my advice would be to speak to a doctor in the know.

    Diving trips from Cairns

Divers Den have generally positive reviews on TripAdvisor. Most of the complaints are from customers with specialist dietary requirements, or those who don't like to dive the same site more than once. To explain that a little more, if you go guided twice at the same spot, even with diferent...

    Diving trips from Cairns

To maximise dives I would suggest 2 day 1 night with DSDD. 5 dives on the first day and 3 on the second. What you are doing is swapping 4x 90 minute (minimum) transit time to 2x 90 minute transit time and converting the time saved to diving. There is less of a rush, more time to relax etc. What...

Still worth it without a liveaboard? Cairns/Port douglas

On the 29th September the Prodive Sydney/Manly dive boat Sealife V schedule suggests a dive to the SS Duckenfield. It would be two morning dives (2nd dive may be at another location) but locations are subject to conditions.

Suunto Zoop not showing NDL time during dives?

In my experience Suunto have fantastic customer service. Just return it to the shop you bought it from.

Suunto Zoop not showing NDL time during dives?

The zoop has three digits to display NDL (previous Gekko had only two digits so would only display an NDL of 99 or less), and should definitely be showing something at 73' regardless. My first thought was that you could be in gauge mode, but that isn't an option on the Zoop so I think you have a...

What are the best times of year for the GBR?

June - September you have whales, Dwarf Minke and Humpback. June - September are the coldest months and you will feel the cold to some degree, especially if using a rental shorty. Visibility is generally at it's best. November - May is stinger season. Water is warm enough to dive with minimal...

    Wrecks Diving In Australia

Yongala is a great Dive. From Sydney some of my favourite sites are; Magic Point, Long Reef / Fish Appartments and Wedding Cake. A little further north you have Seal Rocks and Fish Rock. All of them are great sites, hope you have fun wherever you choose.

Reasonable amount of time between Rescue classroom and OW scenarios

You paid for a course that requires a specific amount of inwater training. I think that 8 weeks is already pushing the limit between theory and practical experience. Don't wait for them to schedule a course. Demand one, and if you aren't happy with the result then name and shame.

Salad oil? What else do you use your mask for other than diving or serving food? ;)

Are Thai trained instructors looked down on and turned away in Oz

Fortunately most of the operators I've worked with in Oz haven't been as arrogant to dismiss all Thai trained instructors. Their policy has been to look at qualifications and experience, and then team-teach that instructor alongside one of their own for a final appraisal. I've seen locally...

    Defogging Sequence

I also use that method. Never have to worry about having defog or being able to rinse the mask before putting it on.

    Defogging Sequence

Use toothpaste on a new mask out of the box, and then spit moments before every dive. I'm not a fan of using a lighter flame as tempered glass can be weakened by exposure to heat. Perhaps not very likely but certainly more chance of something going wrong than using toothpaste.

Complete the book and watch the DVD now. Revise the material again a couple of days before the test and you will be prepared.

    Is the paper logbook necessary?

Working on a liveaboard as a supervisor I've always been happy with a C card for proof of training or experience. One notable time for asking to see a logbook was having one OW certified diver complain about the 18m restriction I had placed on him for the trip. He said he had done hundreds of...
