Dive travel to Fiji with a spouse with a disability

I can vouch for Taveuni Dive Resort as well. I've seen them accommodate disabled or injured divers on my trips there. You can arrange for a short truck ride to and from the dive boats if walking across the road and up and down the hill is a concern. All the walkways in the actual resort are...

Changing batteries in humidity and heat

Actually my bad, got the wrong units. My pump is in inches hg, so 10 there is more like 5 psi. I can get it up to 15+ on the pump which is over 7 psi, but my hand gets tired and there's not much point going any further. Still, it's a significant pressure reduction from sea level, equivalent...

Changing batteries in humidity and heat

Yeah it's not gonna help if you have actual droplets already formed, like from dripping something inside while changing lenses. I've done that before and had a droplet fall across the inside of my dome port mid-dive. Not fun. But it does help if you're just someplace hot and humid where...

Changing batteries in humidity and heat

If your housing supports a vacuum pump, that pretty much eliminates the need to ever worry about fog. Lowering the pressure makes the air inside the housing much thinner and drier, and it won't tend to condense on anything.

    pre trip housing maintenance question

Remove and clean all the housing/port o-rings. Replace any which are brittle or damaged. Clean all housing/port surfaces where the o-rings sit and ensure they are free of dirt or debris. Replace o-rings and lightly lube with the recommended lubricant (usually silicone). Ensure all the...

Trip Report January 2024 Taveuni Dive Resort Trip Report

January 1st - 15th 2024 Gallery: https://www.ewoodimages.com/Underwater/Fiji-2024 This was our second trip to Taveuni Dive Resort, the first being during COVID in June of 2022. That trip was a struggle due to illness on my part (not COVID thankfully, but still tough), and it was just a dicey...

Question Fiji: Your top dives (besides the Rainbow Reef dives)

No it was before that. But I recall the reef looking pretty pristine, especially the hard corals compared to the rest of Fiji, so it's a shame if it took a bunch of damage.

Question Fiji: Your top dives (besides the Rainbow Reef dives)

Both the Astrolabe reef and the Bligh Waters were very nice and comparable or better than the best of the rainbow reef, but can be a bit difficult to access. There aren't many good resorts on the south/east side of Kadavu or Ono with access to the astrolabe reef. I think COVID killed a bunch...

Question Tray and Arm Suggestions for Canon Housing

Check out ULCS's stuff. I've used their arms, clamps, and mounts for years and never had a problem. Not sure on your specific application, but I know they make a wide range of mounts for different threads/housings/etc...

    Question Ikelite Strobes

The DS230 (and I think the DS160II) addressed this, though as someone who mostly shoots TTL I feel like the knobs are actually too easy to turn now. I've had to get OCD about checking that I didn't knock one into manual mode getting in the water every dive. The old ones, yeah, two hands to...

    Question Ikelite Strobes

You'll want to trim up your rig in a pool or something with whatever configuration you'll be using. I prefer my rig slightly negative, so in the water you don't really notice the weight. I use some arm floats when shooting macro to add a bit of buoyancy, and I have adhesive wheel balancing...

    Question Ikelite Strobes

For macro a single DS51 would probably work just fine in most cases. In some ways it's actually easier to shoot macro with a single strobe. Less to worry about in terms of positioning and it's also smaller so it's easier to get in close or in tight spaces. For close focus wide angle, the...

    100mm macro ef vs rf

I used the old EF 100 macro non-L lens (like $600ish new I think) for many years on my 5D. Great lens, no complaints. I never used the EF 100 L IS macro, but I do currently use the RF 100 L IS macro and it's amazing. Definitely a notch above the old non-L macro in quality (and size/cost), but...

    Question Ikelite Strobes

If you plan on shooting much wide angle I'd suggest a pair of 160's. A 51 could work for macro, but you'll struggle to light large scenes. You might also check out the used market, cause you can find some deals. I recently sold my old 160's for probably a third of what new ones would cost and...

    Question Help Choosing Best Location

As someone who has been to both, I'd compare Fiji very closely with Cozumel in style of dives (lots of drift dives and currents to varying degrees almost everywhere). However, Fiji is a lot more diverse and colorful, and the reefs are generally in much better shape since there's way fewer...

Taveuni: Paradise vs. Taveuni Dive Resort vs. Nakia

Opposite of northern hemisphere, so let's call it April/May through Sept/Oct. The peak/best time to go during that period is probably August. You'll have the best visibility and minimal rain.

Fiji Airways starts Direct Flights to NAN out of DFW

Nice, now they just need to do Seattle! That Dallas flight will be a haul though, 1000ish miles longer than the flight from LAX. Probably 13+ hours.

    Beqa Lagoon tiger shark video

Why do people insist on touching the wildlife? I guess it's a shark feed, so expectations should be low.

    Question Rangiroa and Fakarava

Unpressurized aircraft such as twin otters will typically max out around the same altitude as the cabin pressure is set to on a pressurized aircraft. There's not really any reason to treat them differently. For perspective, most pressurized cabins are set to 8000 feet, with a few newer...
